Is LVEs injury a freak one or something that could be tied to his neck roll?

Years ago I ride motocross and wore a neck brace.
Pros: protected your neck.
Cons, due to design, forces went from neck to collarbone.

I chose to protect the neck/spine and it definitely saved my *** on my last wreck.
