With China having 97% of the market share of rare earth elements, many countries are nervous about being able to get supplies of key elements needed for high tech gear. Quantum Rare Earths Developments Corp. has reported they have discovered a potential huge source of rare earth elements, right in the middle of the U.S. While the USGS reports that the U.S. has an estimated 13 million metric tonnes available for mining (about 1/3 of China's reserves), finding another regular source is crucial to global stability. The potential yield of the deposit, found in Nebraska, could be the world's largest source for Niobium and other rare earth elements. Could this be the next gold rush?

Extracting these will be tied up in court for years...

Wonder when we will begin mining in space? I was watching a show that mentioned the elements and resources in our solar system.

It's been almost 39 years since to laid foot on the moon. Until they decide to make (human) landing missions again, it will probably a long wait for that to happen. Although, the moon is supposed to be loaded with helium-3 goodness which is rare on Earth, but abundant on the moon!

Of course that is how the moon is able to float. :laugh2:

Exactly. Will they issue the needed permits?

I'm sure there will be a rare slug at the location that will prevent us from getting it. Oh well at least we have China. :bang2:

Good thing they were not found in California. If so they would be pretty much useless...

There is a big deposit in Quebec, Canada that is currently being developed. There is also a large deposit in Austrailia that is being developed. The next 2-3 years will be fairly tight but thereafter there should be more supply for the free market, thankfully.

We should have never let ourselves become too dependent on China for such an important resource for modern electronics.

There is no reason why the US should be dependent on many countries for natural resources we have here in the states. Including our dependence on Canada for Oil. Everyone loves to talk about oil in the Middle East yet our biggest oil imports come from Canada.

being a stockbroker...i have follwed the "rare earth" sector closely for the last year or so (molycorp, Rare element resources, avalon rare metals) while this is alot of potential there. This kind of "news" has been released several times over the past year...usually after the stocks take big hits....long term...buy and hold molcorp especially since its under 50..i can see it being back to 80 in a year or 2...but expect volitility

The problem with Molycorp is their deposits are mostly of the light rare earths which are less valuable.
