Rate the draft

You let a 7th round pick bring your score down?

:lmao2:

That's right. There is value to be had in every round and we completely flushed it down the toilet with our second 4th and 7th.

Obviously we got Claiborne who is one of the six concensus blue chip players in this draft. He is projected to be a pro bowl player. Regardless of what we gave up to get him ... to grade him on just Claiborne the player .... we get an A plus on that from the 14 spot, and giving up only a second to get him. Whether he turns out to be worth DeCastro and Konz is a different question for another day.

I think getting Hanna in the 6th isn't a bad move. I think he will be much more productive as a pass catcher than Marty B was for a 6th Rounder. I would give them an A for the 6th round pick.

I don't know enough about the remaining picks to grade them. I would say that I have faith in the Cowboys scouting machine, I just think they underestimated how high certain players they targeted in the draft might go. Broyles and Blake come to mind in that regard.

I give them a B. Claiborn is an A+ with extra credit. The rest are all D's and F's.

C+ no second rounder, this should be a starting player within a couple years.

I always thought post-draft grades were pointless, teams know what they're looking for and rate players differently. A lot of draftnik sites that like to do these post draft grades do them solely based off whether they thought a player was a reach or a good value according to their personal board... but you can't properly analyze a draft class until a few years down the line when we see what these players turn out to be in the NFL.

That being said, I am still thrilled we made the move to go get Claiborne. He has a chance to be a Champ Bailey kind of lockdown corner, and pairing him up with Carr on the outside who is another physical up in your face press man CB is a terrific combo. Those 2 moves make this defense an entirely different unit and now that he has the horses on the backend to do it I am pumped to finally get to see a true Rob Ryan attacking scheme.

Crawford and Wilbur are athletic, scheme diverse front 7 players who also fit in perfectly with what Rob is trying to do here. I think they both contribute early in special packages and open up Rob's playbook even more, with both possessing some intriguing upside that we can tap into. Really like those picks.

I was a little lost with the Matt Johnson pick because he was totally off the radar to most draftniks, but that's why the Cowboys pay big money to their scouts. I'll reserve judgement on that one, but I do like the 17 career INTs. There were some good players on the board when we took him so I hope he pans out.

Danny Coale was a refreshing choice in Round 5, I enjoyed watching his career at VaTech from a far. This is a tough receiver who plays his heart out and has a very reliable set of hands. Wes Welker comparisions have been thrown out, but I see a little Hines Ward fearlessness to his game too (minus the blocking). We needed some receiver depth and Coale could find a nice niche in our offense as a potential inside guy.

Hanna is intriguing with that speed for the position. I like John Phillips more than most but we did need a 3rd TE, he's another guy who can push for a roster spot.

I wish we addressed the interior OL and DL but for the most part I thought we did a good job of getting good value and selecting guys who fit what we're trying to do. Like I said, our top 3 picks are perfect fits for Rob's D and tell me that we're committed to making life hell for offenses on 3rd and long. Can't wait for TC to get here.

Are you comparing Matt Johnson to AOA?

The players? no

The reach to draft them in the 4th, yes

I think he means based on everything you know. Not everyone is an expert on here. You can do it man, I believe in you!

:laugh1:

Well the only one I know is Claiborne. So, based on that that qualifier, I give it an A!

:)

A. Would've given it an A+, but we didn't come away with a Center.

Otherwise we answered every other need. Great work.

On the phone with the player when they called him, Jason Garrett said they were anxious because they suspected another team was going to pick him just before it got to their pick. I think the Cowboys have pretty good intel on where other teams might be taking a player. I doubt *ANY* draft site spends *ANY* time on the Big Sky Conference when rating their players. So he's a guy you probably never even hear of unless you've got a fully staffed scouting conference reporting to you on a daily basis.

NFLN just gave them an "A".

what do they know about the NFL? what could a bunch of guys who get paid to do nothing but analyze the NFL know better than the glass completely empties on this blog

It's a horrible comparison. AOA wasn't a reach. He was projected by most everyone to go in the area he did. He was a bust. Not a reach.

Nobody had Johnson even drafted.

B...The Matt Johnson pick is highly questionable. I was hoping for the best Center or Guard that was available.

The good ones were picked before it got to our pick. Have you read up on Matt Johnson?

Easily an A for me. Key needs addressed. It's very rare that non playoff teams address every need in the following years' draft.

I gave them a B even though, once again, the OL was ignored. The center position is a bad-odds gamble going into next season and the only backup tackle is Parnell who is a developmental guy,,, it's mind-blowing and I can only assume that Jerry has an extremely high opinion of coach Callahan's skills vs Houck's.

I gave it a B for now. I don't know a lot about any of the players other than what little I read so far. But I'm liking it more now.

Love the Claiborne pick, even though at first I was upset with the trade. But I wasn't thiking they was moving up to get Claiborne.

Giving a grade would be dishonest on my part. I don't know enough about some of these guys to give an honest assessment. I hope for the best, though. The WR and TE sound intriguing.

This!

I'll give it a C+. While I'm thrilled to have Claiborne, I think we gave up too much and potentially sacrificed another day one starter to get him. Aside from round one, this had a very 2009 draft feeling to it, in my opinion. I have a feeling that three years from now, only a few of the guys we drafted will still be on the team.

I looked through our draft history, and having a day one starter with a 2nd round pick hasn't happened much recently, if at all.
