7 days to go until the actual thing. I tried to stay as "real" as I could, but I found it tough going w/ many solid players BUT relatively few blue chippers in play. It was a surprise to me that my picks went down this path after mapping out various draft scenarios, but this is the version that stuck to the wall:

1A. Kenny Phillips FS Miami (6-2 212) - unable to pull the trigger on Aqib Talib at this spot, too high for Antoine Cason; Phillips is a value pick at this spot and guards against Hamlin walking in 2009
1B. TRADED to Bengals for Chad Johnson WR (6-1 195) - REALLY wanted Roy Williams from Detroit BUT I just can't see Matt Millen being stupid and trading him
2. Patrick Lee CB Auburn (6-0 200) - underrated, needs time to develop but is rising fast and has all the requisite CB-skills to play in Wade's defense
3. Jamaal Charles RB Texas (5-11 205) - bargain/value pick; fits nicely as MBIII's caddy
4. Josh Johnson QB San Diego (6-3 215) - Bartel as our developmental? No way.....
5. TRADED to Titans for Adam "Pacman" Jones CB (5-11 195)
6. Tommy Blake OLB/DE TCU (6-3 260) - outstanding pass-rusher IF he can keep his bi-polar condition under control; worth a shot at this stage
7. Frank Okam NT Texas (6-5 330) - will the light finally turn on for him? Too talented not to be drafted.....

Not sure sfaety is that big of a need at all to use our top pick on one!

1B. TRADED to Bengals for Chad Johnson WR (6-1 195) - REALLY wanted Roy Williams from Detroit BUT I just can't see Matt Millen being stupid and trading him

I'd love Johnson!
Rather have Roy also!

3. Jamaal Charles RB Texas (5-11 205) - bargain/value pick; fits nicely as MBIII's caddy

He's an early to mid 2nd round pick NO WAY he lasts till late 3rd round!

4. Josh Johnson QB San Diego (6-3 215) - Bartel as our developmental? No way.....

I think he shoudl be gone, but I'd love him at this pick!

6. Tommy Blake OLB/DE TCU (6-3 260) - outstanding pass-rusher IF he can keep his bi-polar condition under control; worth a shot at this stage

I'd PUKE, too small to play D-line too slow to play L.B., would be a WASTE OF A PICK based on that, throw in he's a mental case and it's a total waste of a pick!

7. Frank Okam NT Texas (6-5 330) - will the light finally turn on for him? Too talented not to be drafted....

NO WAY HE LASTS TILL ROUND 7, not even close, someone will take him in the 3rd-4th round range!

So I wake up today like I had been smacked on the noggin' w/ a brick: We ain't gonna trade for a vet WR like RW, Boldin, or CJ. Don't get me wrong, I believe Jerry will try as hard as heck to pull one of those trades off, but in the end, the price will just be too steep. Likewise for DMc. So, in that scenario, I think our draft will fall this way now: We trade the 28th overall pick to Atlanta for their 34th & 61st picks (2nd & 3rd rounders). Armed w/ nine picks, I would draft like this:

1.(22nd) Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon (5-10 235) - Big, tough, fast, hard-working player; returns kicks; we bring the pain w/ MBIII & J-Stew
2.(34th) Patrick Lee CB Auburn (6-0 195) - underrated, needs time to develop but is rising fast and has all the requisite CB-skills to play in Wade's defense
2.(61st) Andre Caldwell WR Florida (6-0 200) - speed and nice size, returns kicks; Gator WRs have been suspect in the league but I think this one will be a player
3.(68th) Donnie Avery WR Houston (5-11 192) - more speed; puts Hurd & Austin on notice
3.(92nd) Ahtyba Rubin NT Iowa St. (6-3 320) - slide JRatt to Spears spot, Tank starts w/ Rubin backing him up; pressure the QBs!
7. Shawn Murphy OL Utah St. (6-4 320) - Do your thing Houck.....

3.5 looks pretty good. I wouldn't be unhappy with this one.

I still don't get people putting Josh Johnson in their mocks, why are we gonna draft a QB in the 4th that won't see the field for the next 6 years?

I'd rather another Matt Moore type guy than to spend such a high pick on a backup QB.

I'm not sure about either of those WR picks either, I don't think either of those guys could ever be a #1. I'd prefer Earl Bennett, Early Doucet, Jordy Nelson, Dexter Jackson, Marcus Monk, Adarius Bowman (LATE), even Lavelle Hawkins more than I like either of those two.

Although I actually do like Avery a bit, so maybe just Cladwell is what bugs me.

It's a solid draft though, addresses most of our needs.

So ROMO is NEVER GONNA GET HURT???????????????
Unless your last name is Favre or Manning, most every NFL Q.B. never plays a full season and gets hurt and is out for AT LEAST one game every year if not more, so there's a VERY HIGH CHANCE he plays at least one game every year for the next 6 years if and when he's ready to step in and be the backup.

I wouldn't call a LATE 4th (basically early 5th) round pick as "SUCH A HIGH PICK".

Like I said, you NEED a good backup Q.B. in today's NFL, because the risk of injury is SO GREAT at the Q.B. position, so I'd rather use a 4th rounder and get a lot better backup then use a 7th rounder or free agent like Matt Moore who has less upside to be the backup since you need to have a good backup since most every Q.B. not named Favre miss time every year.

I just really like Johnson plus I don't want to go through another season w/ Bartel, etc. as our developmental. I'm already nervous about Brad Johnson so maybe if we pick up another vet I wouldn't obsess over a QB fairly high in the draft.

I'm weary myself about Florida WRs BUT I just feel Caldwell will break that string of "duds" in the pros from them. I like Jordy Nelson and would be happy if we took him inplace of one of the two I have down.

Altered due to the Pacman Trade (projected trade w/ Atlanta still in effect).....

1.(22nd) Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon (5-10 235) - Big, tough, fast, hard-working player; returns kicks; we bring the pain w/ MBIII & J-Stew
2.(34th) Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma (6-3 225) - IF he's available, I'd take him here, tantrum and all
2.(61st) Justin King CB Penn St. (5-11 190) - IF Patrick Lee is still here, I take him over King
3.(68th) Ahtyba Rubin NT Iowa St. (6-3 320) - slide JRatt to Spears spot, Tank starts w/ Rubin backing him up
3.(92nd) Donnie Avery WR Houston (5-11 192) - more speed; puts Hurd & Austin on notice
4. TRADED to Titans for Adam "Pacman" Jones CB (5-11 195)
5. Josh Johnson QB San Diego (6-3 215) - Bartel as our developmental? No way; I'd take Erik Ainge here IF Johnson is gone
6. Tommy Blake OLB/DE TCU (6-3 260) - outstanding pass-rusher IF he can keep his bi-polar condition under control; worth a shot at this stage
7. Shawn Murphy OL Utah St. (6-4 320) - Do your thing Houck.....

Oh man. I am not cool with this at all.

All about a trade down from 28 if RW isn't available, but I am very happy with Cason/Phillips at 22/28 then RB in the 2nd, trade up to mid 2nd if need be for a Charles/Rice.
