Running back Ray Rice will stand on his forty time from the combine. He did post a 39.5 inch vertical jump then ran the short shuttle in the low 4.10 second area.

I haven't found anything about the short shuttle (a 4.10 would be outstanding), but he appears to be yet another player to dramatically improve their vertical jump at their pro day workout...

39 inches for Rice is tremendous.

I want this guy more every day.

Snippets from Rutgers pro day

Just a few notes from Rutgers' pro day to follow. As it pertains to the Giants, they had two scouts here today but no coaches. (How you read into that is up to you.) GM Jerry Reese was at LSU's pro day today. The Jets also had two people in attendance -- one of which was former GM Terry Bradway.

As for the draft hopefuls, here's some info (though the official numbers aren't out yet):

*RB Ray Rice was supposed to do only the vertical leap today, but his competitive nature got the best of him and he jumped into a few drills, though he didn't run the 40. His vert was 39" -- up seven inches from his combine number. Actually, Rice wasn't the only one whose combine vert was way low. Apparently, there was an issue with how they measured it in Indy (don't ask me how; I have no idea. I just know everybody was about six inches off what they thought they could do), so most guys are re-doing their verts at their pro days.

*OL Jeremy Zuttah only did positional drills and the vert (31" after he jumped 27" at the combine) and was forced to pull out early when he tweaked his lower back. Zuttah said his back has been sore for about a week. Dolphins TE coach George DeLeone ran the O Line drills.

*OL Mike Fladell measured 6-6.4 and weighed in at 320 pounds. He had 25 reps on the bench, an 8½-foot broad jump, a 5.2 40-yard dash, a 4.9 shuttle and a 7.83 three-cone.

*DB Ron Girault ran a 40 somewhere in the 4.4s. He also had a 10.8 broad jump, 25 on the bench, a 40" vertical and a 4.2 shuttle.

*WR James Townsend's 40-yard dashes were timed in the mid-4.4s by one scout.

*DT Eric Foster had the most reps on the bench with 29. Foster visited the Colts last week and has a visit set up with the Seahawks, according to his agent.

That seems a little weird to me...you run at the combine but you don't run the 40 at your pro day??? I don't think that happens very often.

He ran a 4.44 at the combine...not a bad score to stand on for one, but he also tweaked his hamstring in the process...he might not be fully healed.

I think a lot of players who run well stand on their combine 40s. Why wouldn't you?

Why is it weird? It is common among guys who run at the combine.

If you feel you can't do much better (and certainly could easily time worse) in the 40, there's no reason to run again. It's like hitting on 18.

I think it's more interesting that the combine screwed up almost everyone's vertical. For an event that takes such pride in measuring everyone equally and accumulating all sorts of statistical info that can be compared to prior years, to botch something as simple to measure as a vertical jump is laughable. What's next - only giving out a 42 question Wonderlic test or having everyone run 45 yards?

Man I want this guy on our squad. Saw him A LOT and he would be ideal as a back-up to MB3.

The rumor going around is that they messed up the measurements on the vertical jump at the combine. I don't know how exactly but the starting measurement was off so everybody's jump was low. That's why most people are jumping again and just about everyone is going up.

If we get Pacman, I would try to drop down a bit with our second first rounder and draft Ray Rice. Then we can see if he is capable of being the primary back in 2009. If he can do it, we let Barber walk and take the compensatory pick.

With so many great players, we have to let some walk at some point. We need to start preparing for this like the Pats and Colts have.

Happens all of the time if the player is happy with their 40 time at the combine. No reason to run another 40 if that's that case.

I don't blame the players for sticking to a good perfomance from the combine....just too much to risk
