I believe our Cowboys would be best served salary cap wise to put the transitional tag on RB Murray.

This would ensure a #1 draft pick from any team signing him away from us and ensure a lower cap figure if he stays with us.

What do you folks think about this idea?

Lot's of RB's in the draft and the Ace in the hole could be a run at signing AD.

not sure I understand. If we franchise Murray, we wouldn't need to draft a RB or sign AP. I've always felt franchising Dez was the way to go, however, I do have concerns on how he would react and if he's mature enough emotionally to not let it eat at him all season long.

It would help if you provided the numbers. In 2014 the Franchise Tag was 9.54M and the Transition Tag was 8.033M.

It does not guarantee a 1st round pick as compensation.

A transition tag is a tool used by National Football League teams to retain unrestricted free agents. It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player may make with another team. The transition tag can be used once a year by each club unless they elect to use a franchise tag instead. Transition tags can be rescinded; however, teams that rescind a transition tag cannot use it again until the next season.

If another club offers a contract to a transitioned player, his original club has seven days to decide whether to match that offer or not. If the original club agrees to match, the player is forced to sign with the original club at the terms agreed to in the offer by the other club. If the original club declines to match, the player signs with the other team, and the original team is offered no compensation, as they would be if the player had received the franchise tag.

Franchizing Murray would cost $9 mil a year. That's TOO much for a freakin' RB.

My mistake--I thought if you put the transition tag on a player and he signed with another team it guaranteed the old team a 1st rd pick......thanks for clarifying this for me xwalker.

I agree 100%! Why do people want to even think about this in the middle of a season? We need to get to the off season before this stuff makes sense. Heck....he could break his leg today...no reason to speculate on what could happen until we get to the offseason.

I think the rules were different when it was first introduced back in 1993.

It is too much in terms of cap space. Practically, you might give an RB a deal that delivers 18 mill over the first two years if you spread the cap hit substantially
