Drafted by Cowboys RB Phil Mafah Clemson

Phil Mafah is strictly a power back who won't wow anyone with quick moves nor impressive speed. I do expect he'll serve well enough to start and move the ball well with good blocking. Whether, or not, he manages to start if a more talented back comes along remains to be seen. He's tough enough and a hard runner, though. Honestly, I'll be intrigued to see how well he's able to do in the pro game.

I think he needs to be quicker to the hole to be a good power back.

They claim Mafah was playing hurt all season. If you're talking about Brandon Jacobs, I remember him being slow to get going. The trick to stopping him was to get to him before he got going.
Jacobs was not slow to get going, I think you're thinking of Ron Dayne.

If the injury ruined his burst, then maybe he'll be better than I think.

That happens to every single drafted player....earth shocking comment there. He puts his own pants on one leg at a time. This is football. Cry to someone else about hard.:hammer:
Sad. Discussion is better than childishness.

so we have 7 on the roster.
Williams is here to stay, because he got a $1M bonus.
sanders bonus is 167K. he is the only real veteran we have
we have vaughn, Davis, Luepke and two new RBs.

we are not keeping 7, 6 or 5, at most 4.
the odd man out maybe Vaughn who showed nothing, literally nothing in two years.
then its between Davis or Mafa or Luepke...if we keep 4. it maybe time for Davis to go. Luepke and Mafa maybe similar players.

that's how Mafa could make the roster. else, he is on PS.

Mafa is not that impressive. he is big, and people fantasize about him being that power house RB....its a fantasy. wishful thinking.
Yeah, he's big and that's it.

I honestly cannot see how he could be better than Luepke.

Not the ones playing in the Big 10 or SEC.
I played at the Air Force Academy and against Colorado, Notre Dame, Florida...and Tennessee was played in the Sugar Bowl. Then I played for little NAIA small college champs at Texas A&I. From that team I played with 6 players drafted and future Pro Bowlers.

Where Eugene Upshaw and later very fast Daryl Green came from. Heard of them? How about John Randle who was a walk on for Minnesota who snuck some weight into his underwear for weight enough to be given a chance to tryout.

It is not dependent upon just where you are from, but one's football heart!

A man earns his own way, even today.

I see some King Henry in this kid. Big powerful dude, with some quick feet that guys don’t want to hit. I like the pick.
I wouldn't want to go there you're not going to get a lot of people that are going to agree with you but I'm going to go old school he looks like Legarrett blount to me and I think that's fair he had a really good career better on some teams not so much on others he was a little inconsistent but the dude was physical and I believe he helped the Patriots in some Super Bowl runs.

I mean today's player that I can compare him to maybe James Connor and that guy over with Arizona possibly kind of looks like this..

But I'm OK with his floor being Rico Dowdle LOL . Here comes all the incoming people that think we let go of the next Adrian Peterson LOL they we never should have let Rico go.. You know him and his two whole touchdowns one running and one bobbled should have caught on the first attempt three times touchdown but hey he got it. Don't get me wrong I like Rico but the people who think his 1000 yards which were very vanilla and I appreciate that he's a hard worker but we can't have a dude that can't break big plays at all and doesn't score touchdowns when you're big and physical you're supposed to be able to score touchdowns and I know some of it was our offense but come on dude two touchdowns I mean if you have 1000 yards that means you got enough touches where are the touchdowns

I'm betting even if I'm going to bring this name back in here Jayden Blue is only a part time back in a running back by committee maybe splitting times with this guy I'm betting even if he only has about 400 yards on the ground he'll have about five or six touchdowns this year as a rookie..hmmm.

Well this was my response above to what I think this guy possibly could be the potential we're all looking at his potential no one knows anything but my comps are

I'm going to go old school he looks like LeGarrette Blount to me and I think that's fair he had a really good career better on some teams not so much on others he was a little inconsistent, but the dude was physical, and I believe he helped the Patriots/Eagles in some Super Bowl runs.
Blount stuck around in New England through the 2016 season, when he won a second championship. A year later, Blount went on to win his third Super Bowl ring. But this time, it was with the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII against the Patriots.

I mean today's player that I can compare him to maybe James Connor and that guy over with Arizona possibly kind of looks like this both They're built very similar they don't do anything special but they grind it out and can be definitely productive as you're 1st or 2nd down back and then you bring in guys like Jayden Blue you know thunder and lightning,

Blount had an extremely quick first step and was quick to the LOS. Polar opposite of Mafah.

With MM, he had a FB in Green bay but here he didn't have that blocking fullback here. Luepke was a jack of all trades but I don't think his blocking was a plus. But he lined up at H-back, TE and even RB for a few snaps.
Curious to see if Schott values a FB at all, or that jack of all trades, master of none type of back. Showed he had hands to catch the ball with limited snaps

Definitely an interesting battle to watch for better or worse during TC. Really can be a free for all determining 2-4 or how many they even keep.

I dont see it with Mafah. What does he bring to the table? Hes big but thats about it. Pass Pro isnt good for his size and weight. Doesnt offer much speed or anything in the passing game. He will battle Luepke for the short yardage / FB Role in my opinion

As I said I hope he makes it. But even Clemson fans say he is a slow runner. Good in short yardage. Despite the highlight videos isn't going to run away from anyone. Slow to the hole. But he will be wearing the Star so I'm hoping he becomes aa All Pro.

Reminds me of Greg Jones (FSU / Jags). Big, powerful, decent speed. Jones tore up his knee late in his college career. He had a nice career with Jax as a FB, but wasn't the same guy he was in college.

Everyone is a potential star at this point. Its now time to sit back and see what this team can become.

I think FB is gone by the way side. they get what? 5-8 snaps a game as a gimmick and they have to be really really good to even get that many snaps.

I don't think Schotty values FB and Luepke is probably gone.

I think he needs to be quicker to the hole to be a good power back.
That would help, no doubt. Nevertheless, he's likely going to have blocking that's good enough to allow him to enjoy the daylight he'll need to succeed. How well that serves him remains to be seen.

I agree. Luepke main shot is if he can be that power back worthy of the 3/4 spot, that can pinch in as H-back.

Sorry, but I don't think Mafah compares well with LeGarrette Blount at all, to be totally honest. Phillip Mafah isn't quick enough to the hole to deserve that honor, nor does he have the quick moves, either. I do believe that he's a tough enough runner to fare well enough to give the Cowboys a decent RB, if the blocking is sufficient to open the sizeable holes he'll require. He's just a power runner with average speed and enough strength to break tackles, imho. He's likely good enough to start, though.
