I distinctly remember a preseason game against the Houston Oilers in 1992 (I think) being very much like this one. The first string offense and defense looked great early but things didn't go so well after that. I remember the offense moving right down the field for a TD early in the 1st and looking really sharp doing so. The defense also held strong on the first possession, much like tonight as well. I knew that game meant we were in for a nice season and sure enough… nobody stopped us.
This game tonight gave me that same feeling. I don’t know if we will have the same results as that 92 team but I can tell you right now, we have an offense and defense that will give every single team we play, an extremely difficult time.
Yes, the special teams looked unprepared and there were too many penalties… but once those issues get ironed out… and once we don’t have to take out our starters… look out!
The RB’s are what specifically jumped out at me tonight, and it became clear that we are really deep at that position. I wouldn’t be too upset if we had to have Choice as our starter there. He has impressed me that much.
Barber is going to be a load starting for us but he’s going to require a good bit of rest. That won’t be any problem. When Barber is rested there isn’t a back in the NFL that is as difficult to get to the ground. Teams are going to HATE playing Dallas. When you continuously have to shed a blocker like Leonard Davis only to have to face up MBIII, it must get discouraging.
Felix will back up Barber, of course, and he’ll get most of his carries in that role… but I also think that Choice will come in some to relieve MBIII. Felix will be playing at the same time as Marion in some instances, meaning he will be in there with both Barber and Choice at times. IOW… I think Felix is going to play a role for us that will be very different from what Julius did last year. Felix won’t be just the backup RB, but will be moved all around and will be in the slot a decent amount. That would leave Choice as Barber’s every-down, grind-it-out sort of relief.
Just look at what the three of those guys did in the very first preseason game. Remember, they had limited chances, San Diego has a very good defense, and the offense takes much longer to get in sync than the other side of the ball.
The three RB’s combined for 17 carries for 96 yards for 5.65 YPC. I’ll take that all year long. In the regular season, we’re going to have WAY more than 17 carries and we won’t have nearly the 3 and out’s that Brad Johnson orchestrated. These three guys shined every time they got a chance.
Here’s the breakdown:
Barber: 4 / 24 for 6.0 yards per carry
Felix: 6 / 32 for 5.3 yards per carry
Choice: 7 / 40 for 5.7 yards per carry
Barber was his usual self but only got one drive, like a lot of our offensive starters.
Felix was better than outstanding, showing terrific instincts, burst, vision and hands. His total offense in the limited time he got to play was 61 yards. That consisted of his 6 carries listed above as well as 2 receptions. So, he had eight touches in the game for 7.6 yards per touch.
Just imagine Jones getting double the amount of touches and you can begin to understand what he’s going to mean to the offense. He will diversify and juice up what was already one of the NFL’s highest scoring offenses. He’s just so incredibly fast and quick, that defenders kept taking poor angles on him again and again.
Choice showed good instincts and toughness, which I already knew about… but he also displayed game quickness that I didn’t think he had. If called upon, he’s going to be able to really help. He is a damn good player in his own right and will be able to give Barber rest while Felix stays in his versatile role.
I had hoped to see exactly what I did tonight from the Dallas RB’s and these three didn’t disappoint.
I can’t wait for the next game.
