RDE still needed

Doesn't matter if DLAW coming back in 4 games, or Mayowa is the second coming once he heals up.

Neither Russell or rook Tapper are the answer for the 2nd most important position on DL. Both are better suited to LDE, if they can even make the team, let alone reps in the rotation.

This is the biggest question mark and NEED on the team. Praying that we hit on another Irving or Jenkins after cuts would just be irresponsible.

Need to make SEVERAL moves to shore up that key spot. That would send a clear message to everyone that Cowboys are all in for Romo's remaining window AND that Gregory needs to get his act together now.

Why does so many want to make moves constantly. How can you have time to evaluate what and who you have if you are always switching players out.
Give it another week at least, probably more like 2 weeks. As there is no one out there that is any better. If they thought there was, they would already be here.
And the 1st cuts won't happen for another week or so.

I disagree that Tapper isn't suited to play RDE. It's hard to evaluate since we haven't seen him play yet, but he has the speed to play the position. I don't want to count on him to start, and that's the worry because if Mayowa gets hurt at all in the first 4 games then Dallas might have to resort to playing Russell there. I see a role for Russell on the team, but it's solely as a backup LDE.

RDE needed by trade? How else are we gonna upgrade unless we do that. Which Jerry & Co. don't want to do at this point.

It's funny how the same positions can be a problem year after year but never get addressed properly.

DE, LB, SS, and possibly CB unless Claiborne is finally ready to show something and Carr is more consistent.

The problem with the idea of trading for a RDE, is what team has an extra quality RDE available to trade? Every team values that position, and every team is looking for more of it. Trading is not easy to get done in the NFL unless a team is willing to give up really high draft picks, or if you are trading for a bottom of the roster guy. I don't want to give up draft picks, and I think with a high waiver wire position Dallas will be well suited to picking off from other teams finals cuts.

And we have no idea how our pass rush up the middle will be once season starts (with depth at DT). That should help free up blockers for LE/DE.

Tapper is a 4th round pick who will be 3rd string. Why does he have to be "the answer" after one preseason game?

The starters will be DLaw & Mayowa or DLaw & Irving. Russell, Tapper and probably Irving will be backups rotating in for 15 - 20 snaps per game. I'm not opposed to picking up someone if they become available but the depth chart lines up exactly with Marinelli's wave attack and is basically what they designed in the offseason.

The key at this point is Mayowa and we haven't seen him play yet. Lets do that before we jump to conclusions.

Realistically, knowing how the FO is dedicating itself to future cap prosperity, I don't think we'll make a major trade for a DE anytime soon.

I'm reasonably confident they're inclined to see what we have in house and how they might progress before any acquisition is undertaken.

What I am anticipating in terms of acquiring another DE, would be for them to acquire someone from the waiver wire when cuts are made.

Too soon to say for me. With Dwight Frreney no longer available, I think you're forced to see what you've got. And neither Mayowa nor Tapper played against the Rams so we still don't know about either of them.

Cant use the microwave mentality on this. Give it time... at least two more games.

What Stash said.

Does anyone know if Mayowa is going to practice today? Tapper? I really don't think Tapper ends up 3rd string. There really isn't such a thing once you cut down to 53. I believe that Lawrence and Gergory don't count against 53 until they come back from suspension. So our DE's that are likely to be kept for opening day are Mayowa, Irving, Tapper and maybe Russell. DT's are McClain, Crawford, Thornton, Crawford and Collins. Based solely upon limited exposure, Jenkins might be able to sneak in...he was by far the quickest off the line the other night, with Jack Crawford a close second. Upon return of Lawrence, the likely odd man out unless he shows something is probably Russell. I would have loved to have Freeney here, he was the last available free agent vet that made sense.

There won't be much available that will be any better than what we have. Our only legit trade material is McFadden or Morris and Leary. If Leary performs as disinterestedly as he did the other night he isn't going to bring much. I don't think any of those guys is going to bring a "quality" DE in return. Some rosters to watch are the Rams as they do have a lot of bodies. The Dolphins are talking they might have to cut someone decent...Leary would seem to be a potential fit for them. I would look to Carolina, Arizona and Seattle as well for possible help.

Oh, and our LB's are REALLY shaky. Lee, Hitchens and Nzeocha seem to be the best three, with Wilber looking awful the other night. Hoping Damien Wilson can get into the mix soon. Durant and Gachkar are meh. Don't really see a whole lot out of the rest of the bodies.

Morris looked interesting.

Morris looked interesting.

Morris did a couple of good things, also got trucked a couple times and wasn't in great position several others. He is worth watching but I think he won't be kept when all is said and done.

Akunne was also a surprise. Muamba (sp) and King around the ball alot too. DL inconsistent containting edge and DTs were on roller skates on power rushes up gut, especially Roe and Dixon.
