One of those Dallas prime-time games is a Monday night trip to Buffalo on October 8th. I’d love for somebody from the league office to explain that decision, when other games available that weekend include Atlanta at Tennessee (Michael Vick against Vince Young), the Jets and the Giants in New Jersey, Seattle at Pittsburgh (Replay of Super Bowl 40) and Baltimore at San Francisco (strong defense against one of the league’s young and improving offenses.)

Thats his only good (*&%#oint. Buffalo may be the worst team in the league next year.

and why is he *****ing? The NFL doesnt make a trillion dollars a year for no reason, theyre (*&%#utting the best games out there, or teams that will get them big ratings (Green Bay)

and that idiot Kornheiser.

He's only good on PTI. He knows very little about the NFL.

Why is espn keep harping about Monday night oh wait it is now second fiddle to Sunday night and they are now hosting Monday night games.

Everyone is harping about Monday night games but has the media not figured it out Monday night draws way less than Sunday night games.

That is how you should be measuring how big a stick a team wields Sunday Nights for the win and it looks like we got 4 and a Monday Nighter

It has NOTHING to do with respect for a team that hasn't won a playoff game in 10+ years & EVERYTHING to do with money from the billions of new fans from the mid 90s.

My reaction is that the Cowboys are freaking awesome.

It's like Parcells said, the Cowboys are like the big show in Vegas. People care about our team, even if they won't admit. They want to see us fail, and are obsessed about it. Do you think anyone outside of the 95 corridor and the NFC east gives a crap about the Commanders? The Giants? The Eagles?

The truth is no. They don't matter like we do. The TV ratings aren't lying, and the execs know it. We get put on TV because we matter, more than any other team in the league? Don't like it, small-market Chefs reporter? Hard cheese. Try moving your team to Kansas and being relevant sometime in the next 10 years.

K?

edit - oh, and lmao at (at minimum) 33% of the earth's population being Cowboys fans, Mossburner. We're huge in Bangladesh.

Billions, wow. We're even more popular than we think. Oh, and it was the early 90's and it was 12 years ago, I think you can drop that as a "reason."

Ratings MB, ratings. Highest rated CBS game last season...a Cowboys game.
Highest rated NBC game...a Cowboys game. Highest rated ESPN game...a Cowboys game. Highest rated FOX game...a Cowboys game. And we almost had the highest rated NFLN game. Networks are going to clamor for the opportunity to air the games when that happens.

Facts of life man.

It's all about ratings and the fact that the Cowboys have the biggest following in the nation.

I'm not hating. I completely understand why the Cowboys get so many primetime games.

I was just responding to a post that it has to do with football respect. The Cowboys generate high ratings and thus high advertising dollars.

Why do the Cowboys have high ratings? Because their popularity coincidentally exploded in the mid 90s.

This league would be so bland without a team like Dallas. There has to be that cool kid, that's just the way it is in every social gathering. This guy, and others, just can't get over this fact because they're not that "cool kid" and never will be nomatter how hard they try. Fact of the matter is, doesn't matter if we're winning or losing, because we're just so damned pretty and cool. The head-cheerleader AND the star quarterback, mixed into one. Hate us if you will, just making us love ourselves even harder!

FOX and CBS are always going to try to keep good matchups on their networks. NBC and ESPN will lobby for good matchups for their primetime networks. What is a good matchup? It isn't just about good teams, but about good draws.

Maybe FOX really lobbied to keep the Vick vs. Young matchup.

Why would a Jets vs. Giants matchup be worthy of a pimetime slot? Sure it will get huge east coast ratings, but it would be a poor draw across the rest of the country.

CBS probably wanted to keep Baltimore at San Francisco.

All the networks provide input on how they think things should shake out. Seems as if ESPN has the softest voice and that is because it is on cable. The league doesn't want its most premier games on a station that doesn't reach the most amount of people. That is why NFL network games are limited to only a few games a year until it reaches more homes. That October 8th MNF is not the best Cowboys game of the year, but ESPN has to have at least one Dallas game to have a draw.

If you look at a map, Dallas is just about right in the center of the country. States surrounding Texas are New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas & Louisiana. There is exactly one professional team in those surrounding states, the New Orleans Saints. There are 8 states that surround the states that surround Texas. There are 5 teams in those states. Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Rams, and Tennessee Titans. In the state of Texas there is one other team, but they named themselves Texans which was a mistake. Outside of native Texans, that will not appeal to many people.

Basically what I am telling you is that there is very little competition for fans in a large part of the country. In addition to this you have the fact that the Cowboy lifestyle of the Old West has been romanticized and is very popular as a cultural attraction. Throw in the team colors which blend well together and are a popular combination and the team's past success and there are a lot of reasons why this team is popular.

I grew up in New Mexico. Every week I got the Cowboys game, and the Oilers game. I grew up on a ranch. I can relate to Cowboys. I worked a little bit in the oil fields of Texas with my Uncle. I can't relate to Oilers. I don't see the attraction of it. Saints? Cardinals? Rams? Titans? Not much to relate to there. In other words, only teams like the Chiefs and Broncos have attraction to a larger portion of their fanbase upon which people can relate. Every team has loyal fans, but not every team is attractive to others outside of their immediate home town. There has to be something to draw that interest.

Basically what I am telling you is that a lot of very careful marketing savvy went into the creation of the Dallas Cowboys. When you throw in the fact that our Cheerleaders were the first group ever and have been romanticized for their beauty, it just adds to the attraction. Come on, do you ever hear anyone saying the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders outside of Tampa? Of course not.

The success of the team is only a small part of the attraction of it. It is the part I am most proud of, make no mistake about that. Oh, and the success of the early 90's is great and all that, but back in the 70's the Cowboys merchandise sales accounted for almost 25% of the entire NFL. The 90's never came close to that. That was even though the Steelers dominated the 70's. Just food for thought.

Add into that the idea that one of the main reasons the Commanders Owner (at the time) did not want to let Dallas into the NFL as an expansion team (at that time) was because he knew it would make a huge dent in his teams marketing in the area. He was right about that as it indeed did..actually it made more than a dent.:laugh1:

That is true. GP Marshall had a television contract across the South as the only team that whole section of the country could watch. Here are the other 11 teams in the NFL at that time.

Los Angeles Rams
San Francisco 49ers
Philadelphia Eagles
Baltimore Colts
St. Louis Cardinals
New York Giants
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers
Cleveland Browns
Pittsburgh Steelers

The 8 new AFL teams had very little fanbase or attraction that first year beyond their own cities.

So you have 2 teams way out West, one small market team (Green Bay), and several teams in the Midwest or Eastern Metroplexes. In reality the only 2 teams competing with the Commanders were the Baltimore Colts and the St. Louis Cardinals and neither of their owners were aggressive in marketing as Marshall was.

The Cowboys were an immediate threat and in a very short amount of time a serious attraction and draw to a huge fanbase. Not only that but look at the college football teams in that Southern region. A lot of very passionate football fans in that part of the country.

Clint Murchison was not only a very shred businessman, he had some good fortune on his side as well. A perfect strategy and of course a well built team thanks in large part due to Tom, Tex, and Gil with him staying out of the way. The only guy in NFL history who may have been a more aggressive marketer than Tex Schramm is Jerry Jones.
