says he kicked lined drives...

most of the one's I saw looked pretty good to me...the first one was a good 6-7 yds into the end zone and the guy still returned in 65-70 yds on us, and it certainly wasnt a line drive...I only remember one that seemed to lack height (other than the squib kick)

honestly this guy is one of the worst coaches we've ever had on our team, and on top of that he apparently wants to make excuses to continue to cover his arse...

Wade said that they had two rookies on the first one that weren't where they should have been and that they had the scrubs in against Houston's first team on the last kickoff.

yeah I saw that...good 'ol Wade, he's got Read's back

Well, his excuse explains the kick returner having room to run, but what is his excuse for players not sticking to their running lanes and missing tackles? It's not much that Folk can do about that, but I always thought that the special teams coach was responsible for correcting those kinds of mistakes.

The first one was a line drive. You could see the flight of the ball on the screen the whole time. The coverage team wasn't given time to get down field.

Bruce is right, Folk needs to put some air under the ball. If Folk kicksoff better I expect the coverage unit to be better.

God I would NEVER stick up for Read but it was blatantly obvious: the first and last KO's, which were both big returns were dart line drives: the ball never got more than 12 yards off the ground: high school stuff. Probably trying too hard to elevate the ball because he knows the guys in front of him SUCK.

line drives my butt........i was at the game and that first kickoff was good
and it was deep and from my seat you could see a hole big enough to
drive small plane through..

I dunno Dave.

Yeah the coach deserves some blame, but isn't covering kicks one of the easier things a player has to learn how to do? I mean it's mostly just staying in your lane.

Some of these guys look like they meander all over the field. I'm not sure how much of that is the coach and how much of it are the stoopid players covering kicks.

I dont know man. I am not trying to bail out read, but I think folk flat out stinks at kickoffs. IN the stadium those looked like line drives to me. The hang time had to be poor. Especially that opening kickoff. It was really low.

I just dont think he can do it any better. Its a good thing he is an outstanding place kicker.

This could be the case if the returner had made it to the 35 before running into a crowd. But what actually happened on that first kickoff was there was nobody covering the middle of the field at all. Their blockers didn't even really have anyone to block.

I dont care if they are line drives or not if you kick it 8 yards deep there is no excuse for them returning it to our side of the field.

Who were our kickers in 2006 when we were 2nd in the NFL in kickoff coverage? Oh yeah, 5'2" Martin "Cannon Leg" Grammatica and Mike "Thunderfoot" Vanderjagt. No wonder we were so good. You know, I might buy the "it's the kicker" excuse more, if our punt coverage teams weren't awful last year with the best punter in the NFL.

And does Wade honestly believe he's the only team in the NFL using rookies and unseasoned players in coverage units in preseason? I'm pretty sure every team in the NFL is using them, but I'm not sure every team is giving up at least one (sometimes multiple) 50 yard returns every single game.

Aside from Read's coaching, I think what we have here is a problem with organizational philosophy. There is absolutely no reason why this team should be this bad at covering kicks with their athletes. We've had great special team units under head coaches who put an emphasis on special teams. When you treat special teams like the throwaway units, you get throwaway performances and throwaway results. I don't think any of our 2nd stringers and role players are truly scared of the possibility of losing their jobs to someone behind them on the defensive or offensive depth chart because they were outperformed on special teams, like they were under Jimmy and Parcells.

I agree! Bring Joe "the Mad Scientist" back please!! I don't want to lose games with demoralizing special teams play.

Rooks and scrubs wanting to make a play instead of doing what their told. JMO.

Folk did kick some low kicks.

On the first one, the guy ran beyond the 20 before our guys were even in the picture. I remember thinking we either have the slowest ST units in the league or that kick was a line drive that didn't give them time to get down the field.
