Reading the safety tea leaves

Roy Williams in his prime was as good as anyone in the league. Now we have Jeff Heath. That's an embarrassment of riches. What else do you want? Mike drop.
wont argue that. His first couple years were good...until the rule changes. Problem was he was a liability in coverage. I don't consider him great..but good.

TE="Alexander, post: 8332369, member: 2328"]Well, was I wrong?

And yes, I am at peace. I am not tortured. I just happen to think they really and truly don't care about anything other than making money.

Say that reminds me, Frisco practices opened today! AT THE STAR!

pt barnum at it again. All he needs is a top hat and a cane...

Think the best option is George Iloka.

Only costs money. While not the ET level of safety he does provide years of starting experience and still is in the "prime" years.

Meh, I think the best option is Dominic Sanders.

We seemed to be a bit short on depth at safety prior to Xavier getting injured and Showers going on IR. What we don't know is what the team thinks they have in young guys on the roster.

I know many of you have been beating the ET drum saying the trade is imminent and you guys may be right. That's certainly one possibility.

I may be in the minority but I think the Cowboys have options at safety. They could bring in ET. That's certainly not outside the realm of possibility. They have seemed to keep a roster spot open for that eventual possibility coming to fruition.

On the other hand Jeff Heath is a very underrated player at safety. I also think Frazier is a real find as a strong safety. So that's two very solid players, and I'm higher on Heath than most.

To the Cowboys credit, so far they haven't panicked and given up the farm on ET. That's prudent team management.

But there are other ways of grabbing a safety or two. Teams will have to cut rosters almost in half in about two weeks. Could the Cowboys have their eyes on a safety or two who will be coming available on roster cutdowns or in trade for a late round pick?

It makes sense to poach a safety or two at the cut to 53. Some solid players will be available to be picked up on the cheap. That may or may not be the "plan", but it is certainly a safety net that should give the Cowboys some options if they are unable to pickup ET or another safety in a trade, or if they aren't happy with what they have.

As soon as you said that Heath and Frazier are VERY solid players I stopped reading.

20 years is waaay to long to be void of a stud at safety. Its one of the most important positions on any team. Without a QB for the db's...we are sunk. You all feel giddy about the prospects of Woods and Heath at safety? Barry Church looks like a perennial Pro Bowler in comparison. George IIoka isn't the answer. He is known as a big hitter. That doesn't jive with todays rules. But Earl Thomas is the best fit. We been kicking the can down the road for 20 years at safety. Its just dumb.
What??? So Darren Woodson was not a stud at safety?

The "tea leaves" read 4 months ago that the Cowboys needed safety help and they did nothing - didn't even draft one in the later rounds. The front office can't be surprised that they are in a bind at safety when they willingly headed into camp with only 3 competent FS on their rosters in Heath, Woods and Frazier.

That has been a puzzle. No matter who you think plays what, 3 is not enough.

Normally we cover ourselves with a cheapo vet.

Maybe they were more certain they would sign ET, but have changed their minds on it.

This reminds me of the 1993 season when stubborn Jerry thought he could win with Derrick Lassic. His stubbornness lasted two games into the regular season before he came to his senses and got a deal done with Emmitt.

Earl Thomas is out there and could be had with the right offer. He’s the best safety in the league, at a position where the Cowboys have a serious liability.

It might take us losing a few games, unfortunately, to wake Jerry up to making the deal. I certainly hope not.

When they say "we like what we have" that means they have closed the book on getting any sort of upgrade.

They have made up their mind that is the way they are rolling.

"We like what we have in Phil Costa."

"We like what we have in Joseph Randle."

"We like what we have in J.J. Wilcox."

Make a little more sense now?

We like what we have in mediocrity and less than average head coach.

"reading the tea leaves", how about reading a draft board? and some tape? and the money?

with no FS to speak of the Boys drafted just 2 Ss in the last 3 years ... Frazier and Woods, both R6 picks (both SSs from weak schools)
and let's not forget JJ Wilcox for a R3 pick back in 2013, an admitted experiment from day 1, also from a from a weak school

Frazier looked good late last year in the box, takes great angles and don't miss tackles
Woods looked ok in coverage, but takes odd angles to the ball, has tackling issues, doesn't panic
Wilcox was a wasted pick that still ticks me off

and there's Heath, our best S, came in as a RFA (from Sag Valley) ... he's developed into one of the better Ss in the NFL but still takes a crazy angle now and then

on the market now:
Earl Thomas is under consideration for around $10M a year, a high draft pick, plus a player
* I wouldn't have paid that for Lott at age 29 and we played for the high school *
Eric Reid is considered by many a lightning rod, based on play alone - a $5M FA
George Iloka, a decent SS
the rest - no obvious upgrade over Woods, a few would add depth

looking at options who've been through this camp:
Huff - fast, but small. gets lost, not a hitter
Kelly - way slow for FS
Robinson - has the tools, will get a shot

today they signed a camp body because they need one - now what?

IMO, going into the dress rehearsal - if Robinson plays close to potential he starts game one - here's why

let's ck the tape on Robinson and and the most physically comparable top pick at S in years, Reid. Both are 6'2 with 4.5 speed and can jump out of the stadium - don't miss tackles and take great angles to the ball, watch the college tape on both. I pulled the 1st tape on both "vs" any opponent to pop up in Bing
- so here's Reid vs South Carolina and Robinson vs Virginia:

Reid - https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...FF43A468BA2347CAEA4CFF43A468BA234&FORM=VDQVAP

Robinson - https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...3F3334400AB76458A9DE3F3334400AB76&FORM=VDQVAP

want more - go look at their college stats, and consider the QBs and WRs they played against - one stat really jump out - Robinson PDs 17, Reid 4 PDs,

any way you slice the measurables, tape, and stats - the big diff between these 2 entering the NFL is media hype, there is no other way to account for RFA vs R1

yeah - I'm hyping my 2018 pet cat, but if I'm cutting a big money deal this off season - a solid back up OT is worth more to this team than Earl, and probably half the price

I really hope he can come in and make a case for himself Im not having high hopes but hey anything can happen???

What??? So Darren Woodson was not a stud at safety?
Obviously Im not referring to Woody..but he was at or near the tail end of his career 15 years ago. How long will it be until we FINALLY get real at safety? Denial isn't just a river...

C'mon guys!!! lmao...how long does it take to read the tea leaves?! Holy crap...its gotten just dumb. Obviously this staff doesn't put high value on that position. Ask Aaron Rodgers what he thinks about our safeties when he torched them . Without addressing this, we have no shot at beating his likes in a playoff game. NONE. When we do fix it, then we can talk.

It’s never been about not wanting ET, it’s about not wanting his contract.

Barring an abomination of performance, we will have to re-up Dak, Zeke and Jaylon after next year. If they perform like we want them to, they ain’t gonna come cheap.

They don't have to worry about a big payday for Jaylon Smith until after the 2020 season. Based on his redshirt year of 2016, he'll be a restricted free agent after the 2019 season.

They have the 5th year option on Zeke Elliott which gives them through the 2020 season with him as well, if they even decided to extend him.

You'll have to decide on Prescott after this season, but they'll have more than enough cap space to pay him if they wanted to.

If they traded for Earl Thomas, they could agree to a four year deal that could effectively be reduced to just three for cap purposes. That would cover 2018, 2019, and 2020 and they could move on after that season, just in time to pay Jaylon Smith, and if they decided to, Elliott.

Thomas could be coming off the books just in time for when Smith and Elliott's big contracts would come on.
