Really brief practice report: Roy Williams, Stephen Hodge dress out again

We figured Roy Williams would practice again today after things went well in his return yesterday. He did.

We weren't so sure about Stephen Hodge after Wade Phillips said the sixth-round linebacker's surgically repaired knee gave him problems again yesterday. But Hodge was dressed out and working with the special teamers this afternoon.

There weren't any surprises as far as guys held out of practice. New OLB Curtis Johnson, who suffered a hamstring injury before the Colts cut him, joined the players working out off to the side.

I know we need Hodge on ST's but I hope we don't try and rush him back too soon. I would rather wait until he is better from a health standpoint to get him back out there.

I agree only if he's a lock to make the team. I know he was an early favorite to make the roster, but as much time as he has missed, I'm not so sure he's anywhere near a lock, now. If he's on the bubble or on the outside looking in, he just about has to try to play through it.

Wade at his newser this afternoon was pessimistic about Hodge.

Sounds like he's given up hope of him playing anytime soon. Making bad progress from the surgery he had a while back Wade seemed to say.

Then a reporter asked if Wade was gonna maybe put him on IR. Wade was noncommittal.

Why put him on IR and pay him a salary, when next year another draftee can come in to fulfill the same objective?

because if we cut him, anybody else can sign him

just because he cant help us this yr, doesnt mean he'll never help us at all

I would just rather not rush him and place him on IR, Johnson is here now, and supposedly has some experience playing on ST's too, although he is still kinda nicked up.

Rest Hodge this year and count on, Butler/J Will/Carp/Johnson/Stewart to be the backup LB's until next year when we get B Will and Hodge back...

Depends on the prognosis. If it would just take another week or two for him to be well, his value as a special teamer may dictate that he stick on the 53. If it will probably take much longer, IR or injury settlement.

:)

The word is that he doesn't have a long term career. His knee is degenerative. Do you really want to keep someone who probably won't help you this year and will not be able to practice and then teach him the game only to have him retire in a couple of years?

I had never heard he had a degenrative knee condition. Where has that been mentioned at? Not aying it isnt true, but I have never heard that once.

I sure sounded like it was a known fact to the insiders.

Man, that's a shame if true.

Dang that sucks. Whoever it was that first compared him to Beriault was on the money. I hope Sham is wrong though, I really liked Hodge's potential.
