Rebuilding the Secondary

I feel like this year with Byron Jones is the first piece of the puzzle in rebuilding the secondary. He is basically your Tyron Smith for a lack of a better parallel since he is the opening salvo in this endeavor.

I think the Cowboys would have liked for Scandrick to be a kin to Doug Free in this situation, but it looks like he is going to be difficult given his contract, which was just recently redone. I guess we will have to see on that front.

I think they are actually really high on Wilcox and his potential. I think we could see a much evolved Wilcox over the next year or two. He was really raw coming out of college if you recall, but is starting to really put things together.

It should be noted that Church is also signed through 2016. So I think this is going to be a bit slower process that we find ourselves in.

I wouldn't be surprised if we took another corner in the first or second round next year.

State of the Team
I think the defense is really coming together, but we still have a lot of questions and moving parts.

Does Sean Lee stay healthy enough to warrant depending on him as a starter on this team? Do we re-sign Rolando McClain to a long term contract? Do we re-sign Hardy to a long term contract? Will we have to if Lawrence and Gregory both develop into the players we want them to develop into? I think it is troublesome that we could be going into the draft next year with both Mincey and Hardy as free agents as well as McClain and Crawford.

I think the Cowboys would be wise to re-sign Crawford and Bryant before the season begins, and they would be wise to evaluate the Hardy and Mincey situation as soon as possible.

What should be noted is that we're currently 12 million under the cap this year, and a projected 29 million under the cap next year. And a lot of things can change that number for the better.

Making Carr a June 1st cut shifts that number to 20 million this year and 34 million next year. Cutting Doug Free next year saves quite a bit of money as well. I have to say that getting La'el Collins should be priority number 1 right now.

We're in a very good position relative to the cap going forward, as long as we keep drafting well.

I think on offense we stand pat as a very good offense, but I think diminishing the value of the running back position as far as we have is going to be a problem. One that I still hope they address by making a move for Peterson. I believe strongly that even paying a high price for Peterson, will in tandem with the state of the defense put us over the top towards a Super Bowl. I think even giving up a 1st round draft pick in 2016 would ultimately be worth it to secure a top flight offense for the next 3 years. The money saved by getting La'el Collins and cutting Doug Free (in 2016) and by cutting Carr now will more than pay for Peterson, and Peterson should be willing to agree to a new contract here. It should be noted that we are expected to have a significant number of compensatory draft picks next year.

Trades
I would look to trade Hanna and Randle and/or Williams (assuming we got Peterson).

ok so if we are rebuilding, why yet again do we ignore getting a true free safety?

The secondary will already look good, and be headed in the right if MO is like the 4th-5th option. Anything higher than that, its a total fail for us, and a step in the wrong direction.

I think it is important to note that while there were issues with the secondary last year, it wasn't terrible given the lack of pass rush.

We were 13th in the league in defensive passer rating. We gave up 22 passing touchdowns on 18 interceptions. The problem is that too many of our interceptions came from linebackers.

Out of 18 interceptions the corners only had 5 of them....

The pass rush should make them all better, but I think next year we'll be able to make investments in the secondary that help us tremendously become a top flight defense.

I think it should be noted again that the ceiling is very high on wilcox.

Please stop. Unless we are getting a franchise QB to replace Romo we keep that pick. There isn't one player we could get that would put us over the top.

You obviously don't know who AP is... The guy is a hall of fame player, ignoring that to suggest that the 32nd pick would be worth more than him is a bit ridiculous.

I'd like to have Collins if everything gets cleared up. I doubt we're the best situation for him as far as he's concerned though. Still, maybe we can sell him on coming in and being a part of this young offensive line.

Claiborne and carr will be gone next season so we will need 2 new cbs in next years draft or pick up some good fa's.

Nutshell version: They made the intelligent move to try and improve the pass rush this off season which makes it much easier to contend with an average back seven.

uhh than problems for CB. Train him to be one or the other and for the sake of fixing this problem draft a true FS.

If he is running the FS, then we have Scandrick, Carr, White, Patmon, Mo at CB, its all about getting your best players on the field at once.

I'm concerned about our CB situation. Drafting Byron was a good start, but I still feel like we don't have 3 good starters at CB, which I feel is what you need in today's league, especially in our division with Odell Beckham.

On any given down, we're likely going to have more CBs on the field than LBs. And yet we only have 2 legitimate starters in the defensive backfield (Scan & Carr - yes he is a starter, just severely overpaid) and a few guys who are either unproven or proven to be backup material. I get that we need bodies at LB for camp, but you don't draft camp bodies. If that's your goal in the later rounds of the draft, you're doing it wrong. And besides, we need bodies at CB more than anything (safety too). I don't even feel like we have enough bodies in the defensive backfield for the 53 man roster, let alone a camp roster.

Here is how I feel about the who could potentially step up as the 3rd CB:
  • Patmon, 2nd year guy who was a nice story last offseason, but not starting material, at least not at this time.
  • Claiborne, who is basically in a contact year and hasn't shown much of anything to prove he should be a starter. He has great natural ability, but that's where it ends with him. He has a crummy attitude, and is just not very bright at all (putting it nicely). Not great traits for a corner, much less a starter.
  • Byron Jones has the potential to start, and was a good start for us in the draft. Just wish we gave ourselves some more options in the CB mix.
  • Corey White is more of a safety than a CB from what I understand. Don't know much else about him other than he's not starting material at this time.
  • Robert Steeples? I don't know who this is so I can't comment.
Ideally one of these guys would step up and take one of the outside CB spots opposite, so Scan can play the slot, as that is his strength. But I don't see it right now, at least for this season. I like Byron and Patmon, but they are both relatively raw, coming from schools that weren't exactly facing tough competiton. Patmon is a little undersized at 5'10" 185, and so I don't see him as someone that can be very successful guarding opponents' bigger starting receivers. I hope than I'm wrong, though.

The potential is certainly there for Byron to step into one of the 3 starting roles, and I think he will do so, but I would have liked us to draft at least one more good-sized CB in the middle rounds or so. If we would have drafted another corner instead of adding yet another LB to the already full house at that position, I think the player would have a LOT better chance of actually making the roster.

But in any case, that's water under the bridge now. I just hope that one if these young guys wows us in training camp. Because if either Scan or Carr go down, we're gonna be in a lot of trouble at CB.
