Reclamation projects?

Anyone else intrigued by the NFL's reclamation projects?

By that I mean former starters or high draft picks who have fallen from grace and are now available.

There are always a few intriguing names out there and this year is no different. Sometimes players just need a wake-up call or change of scenery for the light to come on.

Realistically and more often than not, it doesn't happen, but typically, reclamations can be signed on the cheap so there's little financial risk.

Two free agent names that peak my interest are:

WR Charles Rogers

and

OG Toniu Fonoti

At one time, both were considered blue-chip prospects and the best available at their respective positions.

For various reasons, neither has fulfilled that promise to date. But if I were the Cowboys, I would bring both in for a look. Perhaps with the right coaching and a new opportunity, either or both could become contributors in Dallas - the talent is certainly there.

Thoughts?

Other reclamation projects?

I recall there were many around here that were drooling buckets over him two years ago and were enraged when we got Colombo instead.

Fonoti is a waste.

Rogers problem is he cant stay healthy.

Drugs are Rogers real problem not health.

He does show the problem with drafting "local" college players, especially in the top ten. The bad influences on Rogers from his Michigan State days didn't have far to travel.

We got lucky with our reclamation project in Columbo. I would not push it.

Drugs don't continually break your collar bone.

He had many problems.

Well breaking his collar-bone in back to back seasons didnt help his developement any.

Honestly I was thinking the same thing the other day and thought a Free Agent Combine would be a good idea.

Invite 100 or so guys that entered the league 6 years or less ago and for whatever reason are not on a roster. Whether they got lost in the shuffle never seeing time because they backed up good players, got sent to NFLE purgatory or had an injury that prevented them from playing and then fell through the cracks, there needs to be a stage that allows them to try out for the NFL again.

With a Free Agent Combine, players like Brandon Everage, Willie Blade or Lee Suggs could show their stuff before Free Agency starts to all of the teams at one time as opposed to trying to set up their own workouts. Teams would be able to see how free agents stand up against other players as opposed to individual workouts.

Then teams could take this data and compare it to the regular combine so that they are fresh off analyzing a group of players and have a better idea what to look for with the rookies.

Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to get players exposure, gather comparative data to improve scouting of the regular combine and give the Commanders ample opportunity to pay top dollar for mediocre at best talent.

I was really high on Everage too. His biggest knock other than a couple injuries was the fact that he gambled a little too much. But hey, that's how he got ints, sacks and bone-jarring hits. He was feast or famine, but I thought he could be coached up to know when he could gamble.

Even with all of Koren Robinson's alcohol issues, he's still had no problems finding a job. What does that tell you when Charles Rogers can't find one? Broken collarbones aren't exactly debilitating injuries. The dude had major drug issues .. and rumors are that it went way beyond weed.

it's funny, since the day of the draft, Rogers was found to have alot of water weight which caused him to fail a drug test, or so that was the report

Drugs are no doubt a huge factor, just as they are for other guys out of the league for similar reasons.

The fact that everytime Rogers got looked at he shattered his collarbone is also a problem, though.

If Rogers ever straightened his life out, I would be for signing him to a minimum deal for a looksee. He still flashed some ability the times I saw him.

If Fonoti gets his weight in check he could be a quality player in the Nate Newton mold. I wouldn't mind bringing him in either if he could show something in keeping his weight in check. Wade Phillips should know a little about him.
