Reed Thinking Retirement
Posted by Mike Duffy on Sunday, January 17th, 2010 at 12:52 am | Categories: 2009 Gameday, Divisional: Colts Game Notes
In a rather unexpected twist to Ed Reed’s post-game press conference, the six-time Pro Bowler admitted that he was contemplating retirement in light of a lingering nerve impingement in his neck.
“I’ve been thinking about it often, when I was on the sideline. I’m thinking about it now,” Reed somberly told reporters. “It hurts to think about it. I’m about 50/50 right now, but I have to talk to the doctors I deal with.”
Reed played and started in 12 games this season for Baltimore, even though he battled through hip, ankle and groin injuries. And of course, there was the neck ailment that caused him to see multiple specialists last offseason.
Reed made two of the more explosive plays at Lucas Oil Stadium, but both of them were for naught in the Ravens’ 20-3 loss. In the third quarter, he intercepted quarterback Peyton Manning and returned it 38 yards before wideout Pierre Garcon punched the ball out from behind to cause a fumble that the Colts recovered.
Five plays later, he picked Manning off again, but a pass-interference penalty on corner Corey Ivy negated the takeaway.
But it was Reed’s statements regarding a possible retirement that got the media buzzing.
”At the end of the day, it’s my decision to play with injuries and to continue my career,” Reed stated. “I wanted to battle through this year, and it’s frustrating when you lose like this. You have to think about your family, and I have a family now, so that’s what I’m doing.”
