You know, one of my favorite times of being a Cowboys fan was 1989 when we went 1-15. I had a Herschel Walker jersey, and of course he got traded. I really admired Herschel, and though that trade really was the catalyst to Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX I have to admit I was a bit sad.
I had just moved to Tucson in June of that year. Towards the end of that season I was riding my cycle and was wearing my Herschel jersey. He was already gone from the team by then. I was at a red light and there were 3 guys in a car next to me. One of them asked me if I bought that jersey on sale. I told him no and laughed a bit. He said, "well, if you can wear that this year then you really are a fan."
It's nice not to have people assume you're on the bandwagon because they are winners.
When I was going to college here at the University of Arizona I worked in the evening at a sporting goods store. I started working there as a Christmas time employee in 1992. There were 3 other guys working there. Marc was a 49ers fan, Chris a Bills fan, and Andy a Packers fan. They had all gone to school together and were good friends. When they found out I was a Cowboys fan the bandwagon comments came flying because we were good again.
Marc in particular had a lot to say. He can be kind of smug. Nice guy, but cocky. He challenged me immediately by asking me who was Dallas' punter before Danny White. I replied, "Mitch Hoopes." That seemed to satisfy Marc that I wasn't a bandwagon fan. The only reason he knew that answer was because his Dad had roomed with Mitch in college at Arizona.
There's 2 ways to get respect as a Cowboys fan from those who hate the team. 1 is to know a lot of useless trivia like that Mitch Hoopes was the punter before Danny White. The other is to have people recognize that even though they stink out loud, you're still behind them and still a fan.
