Reflecting on an Addiction

Hostile that is a great post and brought back many wonderful memories. I was living in Dallas when the franchise started. My family were all Cowboys' fans. If one would have been anything else, he/she would have been disinherited.

Thanks for a beautiful article, and for beautiful memories. Roger is my all time favorite and I can remember many of those "comeback" wins. Of course Troy and Emmitt are right up at the top as well.

Hos, I suggest that show intervention. We can get you help with this problem. I am going to go write you a rough draft letter now.

J/K. Great Post.

Sounds fun Zax. I like everything about cowboys. I grew up on a ranch. I love John Wayne movies and westerns in general. I like country music. I like rodeos. I love History and my favorite era of it is the Old West. Nothing else would fit in my life and keep it balanced but loving the Cowboys.

I would choose an Authurian time of Knights and Armour or a time in the future where space travel is the norm...:D but there are lots I like about Cowboys...up in Pampa, Texas I got to work on a ranch and also rode in a rodeo 3 times (bull riding) never lasted the 8 sec.:( and got dang near killed on the last ride the crazy Bull never did jump or buck nor spun just shot right out of the shoot and ran me right into the back of the arena...broke some ribs and was knocked cold:eek: (trying to impress some cowboy was what got me into it..learnt me a hard lesson I did)

I loved the Clint Eastwood westerns...Hang em high. the good the bad and the ugly, outlaw Jossie Wales and others...use to dig the series of Bonanza, Big Valley (linda evans..mmmm), wild, wild, west, Gunsmoke, the rifleman and others...yup and then all those singing Cowboys Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers

I like the old country music not the stuff of today (blech) grew up listening to Ernest Tubb, Lorretta Lynn, Johnny Cash etc..Older Brothers and sisters got me into the rock scene...Beatles, Who, CCR...

But all in all I spent enough time in a saddle to know it ain't near so romantic as it is made to be some time

Hos, you have always been one of the best posters on the board and you outdid yourself on this post. You brought back a lot of great memories! I, too, have a long history with the 'boys' and maybe someday I will take the time to draft up a post similar to yours........20,005 POSTS!!!! Hell, I am retired and even though I peruse the site almost every day, I don't think I could post that many in my lifetime. As you well know, I will only post when I think my opinion might be valuable which isn't very often. As one diehard Cowboy to another I hope you have 20,000 more!

Roger is the reason I love the cowboys to I remember reading the book on him in the academy and what he did till he could play for the cowboys after reading that I was hooked.

Hos,

From one old-timer to another, thanks for that post. The Cowboys are something special, especially as you grow older and the years are filled with so many memories, good and bad.

I've always said Roger is the most unique and special player I ever saw play.
There was something magical about him. I remember my family went on a trip one summer and we visited friends in Dallas. They took us to the airport to see the team who were returning to Dallas from Thousand Oaks for a pre-season game against the Broncos. I'll never forget seeing Roger walking toward us. It was so exciting! But what made it unforgettable was looking at him with a big shiner as a result of his fight with Clint Longley. :D

A minute or so later, Tom Landry walked by and my family's friend spoke up and said hello to Coach Landry and introduced him to me. I thought she knew him! I was awestruck!

Great post man!!!!!!!!

I was born in 89 and didnt really start loving the Cowboys til i was in 5th grade elementary school(1998)I bought a Deion Sanders Jersey, and my brother was a Skins fan, the rivalry in the household began this year:)
I have yet to experience the excitement and joy of Dallas winning the Superbowl. I have been a fan for 8 years now(Half of my lifetime). I know that we will get back to the promise land, and win that trophy again!!!!!!!

Great post man!!!!!

Great post and nice memories Hos. Like others said, very well written indeed.

Great read. Being a die hard fan of a team is like an outter body experience. It's an addiction few can understand unless they are truly a die hard.

Supporting your team when they suck so bad, it's unbelievable. Listening to everyone brag about their team and call your team and you horrible for sticking with them.

Watching every play of every down even when we're down by 30 or up by 30.

Not leaving the stadium even in a pre-season game when none of the super stars are playing and it's the 4th quarter and we're winning by 21 and their are but a few people left in the stadium.

When your team is 1 and 14 and no possible way going anywhere, yet you sit by the TV and watch every play, screaming at the TV as if the playoffs are on the line.

Let's just say, the best is yet to come.

You know, one of my favorite times of being a Cowboys fan was 1989 when we went 1-15. I had a Herschel Walker jersey, and of course he got traded. I really admired Herschel, and though that trade really was the catalyst to Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX I have to admit I was a bit sad.

I had just moved to Tucson in June of that year. Towards the end of that season I was riding my cycle and was wearing my Herschel jersey. He was already gone from the team by then. I was at a red light and there were 3 guys in a car next to me. One of them asked me if I bought that jersey on sale. I told him no and laughed a bit. He said, "well, if you can wear that this year then you really are a fan."

It's nice not to have people assume you're on the bandwagon because they are winners.

When I was going to college here at the University of Arizona I worked in the evening at a sporting goods store. I started working there as a Christmas time employee in 1992. There were 3 other guys working there. Marc was a 49ers fan, Chris a Bills fan, and Andy a Packers fan. They had all gone to school together and were good friends. When they found out I was a Cowboys fan the bandwagon comments came flying because we were good again.

Marc in particular had a lot to say. He can be kind of smug. Nice guy, but cocky. He challenged me immediately by asking me who was Dallas' punter before Danny White. I replied, "Mitch Hoopes." That seemed to satisfy Marc that I wasn't a bandwagon fan. The only reason he knew that answer was because his Dad had roomed with Mitch in college at Arizona.

There's 2 ways to get respect as a Cowboys fan from those who hate the team. 1 is to know a lot of useless trivia like that Mitch Hoopes was the punter before Danny White. The other is to have people recognize that even though they stink out loud, you're still behind them and still a fan.
