Refs got the rule wrong... again

In the final two minutes, offensive penalties that require clock and play stoppages include a ten second runoff from the game clock in addition to the usual penalty. The game clock starts running again after the ball is set. The game clock runoff can be nullified if the team uses a time-out. The half automatically ends if the infraction occurs with less than ten seconds remaining and the violating team has no time-outs to use.

The rule makes no mention of it being ONLY in the instance of a false start. This is the second time NFL refs have made this mistake, the other being in the Rams-Seahawks game in '06. However, 10 second runoffs have occured four times in NFL history due to illegal formations, though never to end a game.

We deserved to lose, but this just chaps my arse

They've been talking about it on the ticket and I believe that the refs got it correct.

If this is true, it's grounds for the game to be reversed.

Yeah how about missing that obvious facemask call on Bennett? It could not have been any more obvious. These refs are either against us or just stupid or have vision disabilities.

It does mention RULES THAT REQUIRE A RUN OFF. What you quoted does not specify any rule at all.

The refs got this one correct.

I wonder how quickly this forum's tone will change if this happens.

Now THAT call was just plain ridiculous. Just like the lack of a call last week of Tripping in the open field.

Either way, refs are making crucial errors in big situations. Someone needs to get this straightened out.

If true, it's a nice loophole to the rule to have in your pocket.

Never mind my scenario, it couldn't be 3rd-4th down. It'd be 2nd-3rd down because you can decline the penalty.

I agree that the officiating has been terrible this year beginning in week one when Johnson's catch was ruled incomplete causing them to lose the gae for the Lions.

This year has been exceptionally bad, I will agree with you on that.

Ok, maybe, however the NFL needs to clear this up because either way errors are being made

10 second runoffs have occured for too many men on the field, false starts, and illegal formations

They missed alot of stuff, I'm not sure about the 10 second runoff call, but they missed face masks on Bennett and Jones, they missed a number of easy defensive PI/defensive holding calls, they missed an incredibly obvious block in the back on a kickoff return (after Barber's TD and penalty). I think they got it wrong on James int too, more because it should have never been overruled in the first place. The official closest to the play called it a pick, and was overruled by someone else.

I'd say this crew is a prime example of what I have long suspected and suggested, that its far uglier than incompetence in alot fo these cases of poorly officiated games. I'd say alot of them cashed in nicely tonight via Vegas. They did everythign in their power to insure the Cards covered the spread.

So, if this call is correct, does that mean that a team only needs the center and QB to get to the line and all the fatties, etc. can just get set wherever they happen to be standing and all that will happen is 5 yards? No need to run down the field to get to the line to stop the clock?

3rd down and 20 completion: 19 yard gain, 15 seconds left.
4th down: Intentionally line up illegally. 5 yard penalty. 4 seconds left.
4th down: Kick is good.

A good point. If the call is correct, in addition to other errors being made around the NFL, it is a bad rule. that is a terrible loophole.

I hear ya man, trust me though. Garrett knew this rule and if anytime he thought they had it wrong you would of seen a much bigger reaction.

doesnt matter we got a better draft pick because of it.:D

Im with you, we went from drafting 12th or 13th drafting 6th or 7th with a shot to move into the top 5 with some luck.

I've been looking, there is no official NFL rulebook online anywhere, just a barebones "digest" of rules on NFL.com
