Bush to miss last two games of season
NEW ORLEANS -- Running back Reggie Bush will miss the final two games of the New Orleans Saints' season.
Bush injured his left knee during the Saints' loss at Chicago last Thursday night. The knee was examined over the weekend and coach Sean Payton said at practice on Wednesday the team decided to put Bush on injured reserve.
Bush rushed for 404 yards and two touchdowns, caught 52 passes for 440 yards and four TDs and scored three touchdowns on punt runbacks this season.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After 3 seasons he has 1550 yards rushing and a robust 3.71 yards per carry. This was the guy that was supposed to change the running back position. His receiving totals are impressive, but he has failed in what is supposed to be his primary function, a running back.
I compare it to Vince Young or Michael Vick. Both are great at running the ball from the QB position. That makes them dangerous. It would really be dangerous if their running complemented their primary function of passing the ball. Niether, guy passed the ball well enough to really get the most out of their running. Bush does not run the ball well enough to get the most out of his receiving abilities.
I remember Colin Cowherd talking about Bush after his rookie season. He was comparing Bush to Emmitt Smith and saying how Bush had the better rookie year. That what Bush brought to the table as both a receiver and return man was more important that what Emmitt did just running the ball. I disagreed then and still do.
Running the ball is what a running back is supposed to do. Running the ball well is what puts the most pressure on a defense and wears them down. It is what opens up every thing else.
After 3 years Reggie Bush has 3647 all purpose yards(1550 rushing, 1599 receiving and 498 returning) and 24 all purpose TDs.
After 3 years Emmitt Smith had 4213 rushing yards and 41 rushing TDs. Emmitt also was a decent receiver adding in another 821 receiving yards and 2 receiving TDs. I bet Emmitt could have put up a few yards if he was used as a kick returner, but he was to valuable to use on special teams.
I am not really trying to bash Reggie Bush. I just never thought he was worth the #2 overall pick. I expect a lot more out of a guy if I were to draft him that high.
