RT and RE.

RT: Relying on Chaz Green to stay healthy would be like relying on Randy Gregory to be the future at RE. They clearly prefer Collins at LG.

RE: Benson Mayowa has no business being a starter (although he's shown enough to be apart of the rotation).

There are others positions that need to be addressed: Mainly CB, S, and TE. But do we need immediate starters at those positions? No. Depth? Yes.

CB: Brown, Scandrick, and Carroll are your likely starters. Definitely need to add another guy to the mix for depth because of Scandrick's inevitable mid-season injury. But do we need a starting CB in the draft? Nope. Just a guy who can be the #4 CB in dime packages and be a spot starter.

S: Jeff Heath deserves the chance to start. I think the GB game is an indication that Heath can be a league average safety more than it was a fluke. We need another guy to challenge Frazier for the 3rd safety spot, but we have a starter in place.

TE: Sick and tired of wasting picks on TE's early until Jason Witten is officially retired.

McClay doesn't need another 2016 draft. Just get two starters at RT and RE. And depth at a few positions.

Is that too much to ask?

Mayowa is the best DE on the roster

Thats too little to ask. Depth issues are tremendous on defense. Guys will get hurt. Jaylon may not succeed in this league with a brace and the probability of Lee playing a full 16 is always questionable. Carroll is not good and Scandrick cant get healthy. We have an open door at DT, Lawrence is getting back surgery and we dont have another DE worth a lick.

Yikes

I don't agree with you on Heath. He deserves a chance to compete for the starting job, but he doesn't deserve to be handed the job. He failed the only year he was forced to start (granted, it was as a rookie) and has only done well in a reserve role. Plenty of players have done well in reserve roles but couldn't handle being starters.

I'd prefer we have better starting options at corner as well, but I agree that it's likely we'll get by with some combination of Scandrick, Carroll and Brown and not spend a premium pick there.

I also think we'll try to get by at RT with either Green or Collins starting there. I think this is why we re-signed Cooper, to allow Collins to be an option at RT if needed. I'm not saying I agree with the plan, but I truly think we expect some combination of Green, Collins and Cooper to be good enough.

Irving ain't a 4-3 DE.

Irving had some flashes at LDE backing up Crawford. If he shows the same amount of improvement this year as he did last year, he could clearly claim a starting spot next year. No guarantees obviously but the potential is there.

I think they draft an edge rusher to add to the mix at RDE, plus Tapper joins Crawford and Irving at LDE. I think the entire issue is how those guys develop and how healthy DLaw and Crawford are.

I can see that Carrol can be viewed as a fill in starter until a rookie gets up to speed. Thats more then reasonable.
Maybe I don't give Heath the credit he deserved because of early labels but I ask you give me Heath or give me Jabrill, honestly.
I like taking risk off hunches and I feel like that about Rico but just because we have blown too many two's on TE doesn't mean we quit?
I'm going to up you one; we need three future starters. Two early just for arguments sake.

"Flash player" is always stated with regards to Irving, not the kind of label you want as a player in the NFL.....He's got to be more consistent...of course Dallas has too many "flash players" along this defensive line as it is...

exactly. relying on flash players is what led to the awful tyrone crawford contract.

He played very little in college and got even less good coaching there. 2015 was his first year in the NFL, so I wouldn't have expected him to explode year two in the league.

What he did last year was impressive for a very young guy who is very much still learning to play.

I'm not saying he's going to be great... although he might be... I'm just saying that more than most young guys, he's got a lot of room to grow. The growth from year 1 to year 2 was impressive.

He had an all world game at Lambeau Field and then shortly after that got a concussion that kept him out a few games. When he came back he lit up Tampa and Detroit and was a drawing double teams (holds) from GB in the playoffs. Plus he missed a game at Cleveland because of fighting.

He played well in 2016 and will be much better going forward.

On what planet is Mayowa better than David Irving?

Mayowa led this team in sacks and he was inactive two games.

When he came back, he played like a man possessed. Irving is probably the most talented defensive linemen on the team but Mayowa is better at this point.

I hope he flashes more than two games. Even if he doubles that up, he would be an incredible asset.

I agree. I think its too early to put a ceiling on our young DL. Both Mayowa and Irvin could be really good players for us. They are young and inexperienced. I think this year we get a better idea of who they are, but I see little reason not to be encouraged.
