Remember Emmitt's Holdout?

Cowboys lost those 1st 2 games since opposing defenses did not have to focus on stopping Emmitt and the running game. They focused on double teaming Irvin, jamming Novacek at the line, and frustrated Aikman.Aikman didnt want to throw to Harper much, I don't blame him. KMart was starting to decline in production too. Aikman dint have many options without Irvin or Novacek to throw too and no Emmitt.

Excuses, Excuses.

Emmitt is the best RB of all time.

Great read from the SI Vault.

"What's the situation with Emmitt?" someone asked Johnson after Sunday's 13-10 loss to Levy's Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys' second defeat in as many games this season.
"Every time I hear that question I just get sick," he replied.
technically, it wasn't a hold out. emmitt's contract ran out and they never came to agreement. so he wasn't holding out. he didn't have a contract.

He was holding out for more money before he would sign the new contract. That is holding out.

So Emmitt was essentially released by the Cowboys in 93

No. He did not have a contract. His 1st contract was for 3 years. Cowboys wanted a 4 or 5 year deal. But Smith did not accept it. Remeber he arrived in camp late his 1st year. He finally settled for the money being offered, but only IF it was a 3 year deal....smart on his part in hindsight.

This was before true Free Agency. So the cowboys had his rights to sign him. Emmitt could hold out for 10 years but could only deal with the Cowboys with the bargaining agreement at the time.

It took 2 losses and Charles Haley putting a helmet through a wall [which should that act itself put him in the hall of fame]. And I'm sure behind closed doors, Jimmy kicked Jerry's arse to get a deal done.

So it was a holdout then, which is what I said originally.:)

True he didnt sign a contract because he wanted more money but this is completely different than holding out when you are under contract in my opinion.
