Remember That Game Against the Bucs, When the "Knew" Our Plays?

I was just reading this article on the news reader and it reminded me of the Bucs game when the Bucs' defense said they knew our plays. Then, there's this article on CBS, which raises a lot of legitimate points about sports betting as well as various ways inside information can leak out. From refs, to teams' janitors, etc. Will the Cowboys have a better system for protecting inside information this season?

===
If players have learned anything in recent months, it’s that any bets they place on their own phones could come back to haunt them. The next step in the league’s effort to detect gambling-policy violations will become harder for the NFL to prove.

When players use their phones to bet, those phones inevitably can betray them. When players use others to bet for them, how will anyone ever know?

That basic reality has been obscured by the stream of suspensions. To the average observer, the imposition of punishment creates an impression that the system works. The truth is that, so far, the NFL has captured only the lowest of the low-hanging fruit. For players who are or who will be making their bets through others, how will the league ever prove it?

It’s a simple approach. A family member or a friend opens the account and places the bet. The players finances the wagers. The player gets the winnings. Of course, the friend/family member might end up with a healthy tax bill if there are significant winnings. But that’s something the player who has won money that, for him, won’t be taxed can deal with at the proper time. (For players who bet and lose, it won’t be an issue.)

This is probably what most players that gamble do. But you have to have a lot of trust in that individual. The person gambling for you has full control of your future.

Looking back, when I was a heavy gambler, it wasn't fun. It hurt a lot more to lose than any enjoyment I got from winning.

Now I make small bets with friends every week in the NFL. Anywhere between 5-10 dollar bets on many things NFL related. If we win 30 bucks in a week, that's a lot.

The only reason we do that is to make the NFL tolerable. Some of those games are unwatchable. Even at work. So if I have 5 bucks on the Seahawks/Saints going under 27 on Monday night, I'll suffer the game.

Yeah...they say the best thing to do if you suffer from gambling addiction and have lost considerable amounts of money....is to gamble juuuuuusssstttt 10 to 30 bucks a week on games instead of quitting cold turkey (though, if you have a few unlucky weeks, nothing wrong with upping that to a couple hundred a week JUST till you get back even steven).

Same thing with cigarettes

Every season since 1996 I am disappointed that the Cowboys haven’t won another Super Bowl…………..but then I feel so much better when the NHL season is over and a Canadian Team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1993

Hell, the Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t won a Championship since 1967……they really need to move the NHL Hall of Fame from Toronto to Colorado.

ah, the little joys in life.

I didn't open the link but are you talking about 2021 or 2022 game one? In my opinion they may have recognized every play coming from 2022 game one because Kellen Moore the genius decided to use almost the same game plan from 2021's game one pass happy gave up on the run all the while knowing that we just took away amari Cooper Cedric Wilson jarwin Collins and Cwill, and we shuffled our offensive line and it was game one and you know all this and you see that the run game is working with zeke at 5.2 yards per carry he gets two carries in the second-half and they literally looked like they were trying to have that success they had in game one throwing the ball in 2021 with a completely different team basically on offense and of course Tampa Bay recognized it it was pretty much the same game plan they literally walked in to the past because Kellen Moore in my opinion made a huge mistake the damn run was working you don't go pass happy with that type of fresh offensive players to try to do the same thing you do without them was a pretty bad start just like his end was pretty bad and that's why he's gone. I'm not sure about any conspiracy theories or inside information I could just tell you it's pretty easy to figure out when an offensive coordinator just uses the same game plan twice against the same team game 1-2 years in a row

People talk and eventually the truth will get out. Having family or friends place bets is certainly a short term way to hide it, but what happens when it's discovered after going on for 2 years? Like insider trading, or other illegal schemes it will eventually come to light and the suspensions or bans will be long.

To what degree the NFL wants to investigate will be interesting. They could require statement copies of accounts, reward and investigate for anonymous tips.

When I was a heavy gambler I still lived at home. I had zero bills. I could lose my entire paycheck and not suffer. At the time in the late 80s I made about 450 bucks a week after taxes. The reason I stopped gambling was because I moved out and had bills. But when I was living at home and didn't have any responsibilities I did very well. I won more than I lost. Probably because I had no fear. Once I moved out fear became an issue. I stopped heavy gambling sometime in the early 90s. I don't see the problem in what I do now. Other than it's bad to gamble in general.

The NHL only had 6 teams. The top 4 teams made the playoffs. The #1 seed played the #3 seed. And #2 played #4. Odd.

From what I understand the issue wasn't their phones, it was that they used the phones and connected to the Wi-Fi at a team location where the traffic could be monitored. All they need to do is not make bets while at a team location. It isn't that hard to get around.
