So many are still talking about Myles Garrett using a helmet as a weapon but I remember a day back in 1985 in Chicago when Randy White used the Bears Keith VanHorn's helmet as a weapon. White immediately was ejected and as he was walking off the field a ref ran up to him and tried to grab the helmet. White did not give it up and when he got to the sidelines he tossed it up into the stands. White got like a $1,000.00 fine but wasn't suspended. I know different times but this shows just how much society's opinions have changed this game. There was no big outcry by the public after White swung VanHorn's helmet. Maybe it might have been because VanHorn was the dirtiest player in the NFL at the time or just because people, society accepted the NFL as a rough and tough sport that society today doesn't.

Also, the lack of an internet meant there was a fraction of the social justice warriors that there are today....but I think mostly, it was because the NFL was still known as a rough guy sport, watched mostly by people who liked the violence of large men colliding with each other.

Yes there was.......fans/media just couldn't instantly share it with each other like we can on today with social media. That the power of today's social media.....

Heck, Pouncey kicked Garrett on the helmet at the end of the brawl. Is he going to be fined or suspended? The ejection and a single game suspension are all that are necessary against Garrett.

He was suspended 3 games?

Randy White didn't him in square in the head with the helmet did he? Was the game the national game on a thursday night?

the answers to your questions are in there not some right wing talking point about society.

I don't know when or if the rule changed, but today it's an automatic ejection just for taking your own helmet off to use as a weapon.

So since there was no social media back then just how do you know as facts that the main stream public was upset about what White did? Here's a little hint for you. Back then newspapers can people a place to voice their opinions on this, usually the last page or two and guess what there are news articles of the lack of mention on those pages by the public. Whe you have some actual proof the public was so upset then let us know.

Yeah sports have gotten soft across the board

remember when Happy Gilmore tried to stab another hockey player with his skate?

It was hilarious

Hey less than a brainiac Thursday Night Football wasn't even in anyone's mind back then. All they had was a early and late Sunday afternoon games and Monday Night Football on ABC. Yes as the second game in the afternoon most of the viewing public saw that game.

no there was no thursday night football until 95 or so but Didn't espn have sunday night's in 85 or did they start in 88? Thanks for missing the point though.

also Randy maybe did this more than once because the clip they always showed on cbs11 was a preseason game and come to think of it might have been against new orleans.

Edit I looked it up, espn started snf in 87
