I will always appreciate what La'Roi Glover gave us during his time in Dallas. Despite playing for the franchise during the dark ages of the post Aikman pre Romo era, he was a fantastic defensive tackle who garnered 2 All Pro selections during his 4 year stint here... even leading the defense to the #1 ranking in 2003.

Salute to you Sir, those defenses of the early 2000s were the only reason our games were watchable.

La'Roi was great. He was the first big name free agent that I can remember being super excited for when he signed. I also think he started the trend of defensive linemen wearing really tight jerseys so that it was tougher for offensive linemen to grab him.

Wait ... we can do that on defense.

Loved La'Roi. Had forgotten we had a #1 defense in 2003. Anyone have a link to what our defensive starters were for that team?

Just off the top of my head guys like;

Greg Ellis
Roy Williams
Terence Newman
Darren Woodson
Dat Ngyuen
Dexter Coakley

Was a really underrated group. The fact we managed to scrape together 5 wins a season during those years were a testament to our defense keeping game close. Our offense was laughably bad... like the Jets last year made that unit look bad.

Lots of under appreciated players from that list though. I laugh when people get bummed out thinking one of our new DEs are "nothing more than Greg Ellis"... Ellis was a pretty damn good player!

I thought we still had this guy on our roster for potential trade opportunities. :D
I know that is a punchline on the board, but there was really a trade rumor involving Coakley going to Cleveland for some running back.

I can't remember who though. Anyone remember? I want to say it was William Green.

anyone know when we started transitioning to the 3-4? Was it 2005? I remember the stories of Bill wanting to replace guys like Coakley and Ngyuen because they were small and Bill always preferred big LBs and DL. The strategy of the 2005 draft was clearly to reshape the front 7, which to their credit they absolutely nailed.

Nice thread, Finisher...and Glover was a Sapp like presence for Dallas. Enjoyed his play...and the defense was terminated due to the specialty player supply for the 3-4. Bill liked the dynamics in player size and power...agreed. He felt the 4-3 players were harder to get due to how many teams ran that defense as well.

We transitioned to the 3-4 in 2005. Coakley was released to save paying him a $500,000 roster bonus. He turned right around and signed with the Rams.

Glover was a decent fre agent signing.....it does and can happen.
Well, Glover was a different story from a regular free agent.

He was cut in March, when most teams had already been indulging on the rest of the market for weeks.

The Saints cut him out of the blue for salary cap reasons and Dallas swooped in. Unquestionably one of the best, if not the best, free agent signing in team history.

the 3-4 vs 4-3 is a cyclical thing. They go up and down as the years go by. When one is in ascendancy its easier to get players for the other. Personally I think there really is no advantage with either D.

Sad thing was that Willie Blade ate himself out of the NFL; Mario Edwards got typed by the Refs for PI and Woodson injured his back and was done. That started the fall off of Roy. You could see the results the very next year as the #1 D of 2003 went into the toilet in 2004. And that was when BP decided to go for the 3-4.

2006 was the first year it had been fully implemented IIRC
