The problem is our Fore Fathers were also slave owners, which presents a quandary. We will have to change the names to an awful lot of things, tear down a couple mountains worth of statues and replace their likeness on our currency. We got a lot of work ahead of us.
Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.
Many of the founders of this nation were slave holders, and while I don't think this fact should be ignored, I don't think they should be vilified or have their accomplishments outweighed. Unfortunately it was a common practice around the world up until the 1800s. By 1811, Spain pretty much did away with slavery, Brittan had pretty much done away with it by 1833, France by 1848. At this point the world was changing and finally realizing of unjust a practice slavery was and how it had no place in civilized society.
And instead of going with said change, the Southern leaders stood at the precipice of change and fought against the momentum that was happening around the world to end this practice. This is why there will never be any significant movement to remove Thomas Jefferson's name from a building, but there is for Jefferson Davis, John C Callhoun, Robert Lee, ect. Jefferson, Washington and who ever were a product of the times. The others saw where the world was moving and fought it.
