Its becoming clear we are going to have to do this in the next year or two. We still have no real idea how good Free is- we desperately need to get him some quality playing time against top notch OLB and DE's to find out how far away he is and if he is capable of playing at a pro bowl level. We need to know before the Draft next year. Because if it looks like he is not what we hope for we have to get a top LT in the draft. And that will mean almost certainly moving up. Have not really looked at the top LTs this year in college so not sure who we should be looking at.

yeah pretty much- and we are probably looking at least top 15 and maybe top 10.

I'd rather not trade up that high.

JMO, but regardless of the way Free looks we have to add a LOT in the off season.

I see what you did there.

The LT class is deep this year.

There will be plenty to choose in the 2nd round.
I hope you are right, I have no clue. If it's that good is seems to me we would be OK just staying put regardless where that may be.

Ya Okung is the guy that is miles ahead of everyone.

Other than him, there's not much drop off from the rest of the LT's.

There's about 5-6 really solid ones that we can take a shot on.

The Saints reserve tackle has filled in beautifully. Their starting LT is Jamal Brown and is on IR. He's also a FA next year I believe. I wish we would go after a proven commodity like him and pay him the money we'd give to a an unproven rookie. We can do that and use that pick on a safety.

We could find out something about Free soon. According to Micky on the Talking Cowboys Show, Columbo has a nasty ankle sprain. He has had it for a couple of weeks, and got lots of treatment during the bye, but is still swollen.

One bad step and we'll see Free in there.

Traditionally, Pro-Bowl LTs are taken in the top-5 picks of the first round. We might get by in a deep class with a top-10 pick but after that it gets pretty slim.

When it comes time to replace Flozell we will need to trade up for the right guy. Trying to get one cheap is a stupid move and jeopardizes the entire team.

Sometimes you can luck out (Adams, Allen, and a few others were selected outside the 1st round) but I would rather do the smart thing and get a top player for that position.

It's easier to find one in the top five or at least top 15 but there are LTs outside that area. Just not found as often. They even come from the defense although I'd say that's a huge long shot these days. You have to have some luck if you're not in the blue chip area which I hope we don't see outside a trade.

Darn. :(

What a shame that Brewster tore that pec.

Trying Free at RT would be one way to find out about him without worrying about Romo getting blindsided and busted up. BUT I think we will end up having to get a LT in the draft and we will need to be high up in the first rd. The record of LTs taken in the last part of the first and early second is not good. So I think top 15 at least. Depending on where we end up this year that might not be that hard to get to.

...yes, Bushrod has impressed...i did'nt think he would hold up as well as he has...he looked a little shaky initially but he's settling in quite nicely...the Giants did'nt trouble him much last week...

...SAFETY !...will this EVER get solved...Hamlin is the best he'll ever be and the consensus is that it is'nt good enough...Sensabaugh seems okay but a ball-hawking FS could really help out the corners...but i see Jerry going after another veteran to replace Hamlin when the time comes...Dallas has'nt had a difference maker at safety since Darren Woodson...

Except proven commodities make alot more that unproven rookies...even 1st rounders.

Free at RT??? I hope Houck is giving him some reps in practice b/c I would hate for the guy to try playing that position cold. Once upon a time, the Cowboys' OL could play multiple positions w/out missing a beat.

Why Houck no longer requires his tackles to play guard first is mystifying.

Not top 10 picks. They make more than proven starter money these days and that's were you'll be looking for a bonafide LT. And that where my point lies.
