Report: Brees 'livid' about tag, won't sign

Drew Brees is "livid" about being franchise tagged and not receiving a long-term contract, according to WIST-AM in New Orleans by way of Larry Holder of CBSSports.com. The radio station cites sources in the Brees camp that he will not sign the franchise tag deal. Brees and the Saints have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal. If a deal isn't struck, Brees must sign the franchise tag deal or hold out.

I was just reading this. Joe explain to me how the franchise tag works. The Saints have until July 15 to sign him and if he doesnt get it worked and does not sign what happens then?

Sounds like he wants a hefty chunk of that new CBA deal he fought so hard for.

From watching him play and speak, it doesnt seem like "livid" is within his emotional range. One of the most easy going people I've ever seen in sports.

What happens if he doesnt sign by the july 15 date?

He will sign a long term deal. They always do. Look at Chris Johnson last year.

Bounty Gate will go away and come September, NO will again be the darlings of the NFL. Just like the Patriots after Spygate.

The NFL has become nothing more than a soap opera that keeps them in the news 24/7/365.

I agree. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to blow up in any manner.

The Dolphins should pull the trigger on this.

Pull the trigger on what?

Methinks you're just trying to eliminate a RG3 competitor. ;)

A lot of posturing and in the end they will work out a deal. Just off season drama nothing new

He will hold out.

Yes, he is...but everyone has limits. He won't rant, but he has a right to demand what he deserves.

I'm sure a contract will be worked out, and I keep bringing this up, but the fact that they're even at this impasse is a failure of colossal proportions on Loomis' part. Whatever deal they end up with, it's going to be something they could have ironed out before using the tag and engendering animosity with the player. He's an elite QB that you're not going to let walk; you have to pay him, and you don't have leverage in the situation.

They can't discuss a long term deal after the 15th of July.

At that point, it's either sign or don't play.

I read this earlier.

:muttley:

I'm so glad it's working out like this for Brees. I hope he holds out too. He is a greedy **** and I already decided to hate him during the lockout.

Yo Brees, you were at the front of the line of people that signed off on the CBA that allows this. Eat it *****! :laugh2:

Don't know how this impassee was effected by the new CBA. But in years past, if the player wouldn't sign, he could sit at home/not play. But then around the 10th of so NFL game could come to camp/stadium and take his place on the roster therefore guaranteeing that he was still be paid the franchise offer. Of course that leads the Saints with no capable backup and probably they end up with a losing record. Starting NFL QBs don't usually go this route, but Loomis' comments that Brees not a great QB but just a good QB probably really sticks in Bree's crawl. Will be real interestig to follow this story and sees who caves first.

The franchise tag means that Brees will remain a Saint for one year at a pre-determined salary number. In bad news for Brees, the number is calculated differently now than it has been in years past. Last year, a quarterback with the franchise tag made the average of the top five highest-paid players at his position -- in 2011, it was over $16 million. This year, with the new calculations, it's $14.4 million.
