The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly have no plans to let receiver DeSean Jackson hit the open market.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that the Eagles will use their franchise tag on Jackson if they can't reach a long-term deal with him before March 5, the deadline to use the tag on free agents. The first day teams can issue a franchise tender is Feb. 20.

If Jackson plays the 2012 season under a franchise tender, he would be paid about $9.5 million for the season, the newspaper reported. The Eagles could also trade Jackson after it uses the tag on the receiver.

Players can sign with new teams or be traded by their current teams beginning March 13, when the NFL's free-agent period begins.

Franchise tag works great for him - he gets paid, and then can still test the open market in a year's time.

He won't like it. Players rarely ever do. They want that long term contract with the big signing bonus. One year deals offer no security and a guy as diminuitive as Jackson has to be worried about how long he can play in the league.

But that's the Eagles way.....

Recent history with the Eagle Management. If your not the QB you get traded when requesting a big contract.

Can the Eagles afford to pay him franchise money? I know they have that much under the cap, but I doubt he is the only FA they have.

Some team with no sense will step up and trade for him, giving him the big contract he wants.

You'd have to have a pretty serious locker room to keep him in line otherwise, imo.

yep - they are in good shape. Jackson is going nowhere. They know it, he knows it.

considering all the trouble he caused I am surprised they want him around at all.

I love this.

If people think he gave a half hearted efforted at times last year wait till you see what he does this year if he's franchise tagged.

That dude won't take any risks at all with just a franchise tag o him. I love it.

Yeah, there's not much media attention in Philadelphia.

This is a well kept secret only us Cowboys fans know.
