LSU is reportedly nearing a deal with Houston head coach Tom Herman to become the Tigers' next head football coach, according to ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

The deal could be in place as early as Saturday, according to Schlabach.

Ed Orgeron has served as the interim head coach since Les Miles was fired after losing to Auburn in September. Orgeron was 4–2 before the Tigers faced Texas A&M on Thanksgiving.

Herman is in his second year as head coach at Houston. He went 13–1 in his first season and has led the Cougars to a 9–2 year in 2016. He reportedly met with LSU officials on Thursday.

Longhorns keep missing out on premium coaches. Charlie Strong was like their 9th or 10th choice I think.

Now that it's pretty much a foregone conclusion the Coach Strong is gone after the TCU blowout loss. We will be seeing more Herman to Texas rumors.

Not so fast!

LSU has removed the interim tag on Orgeron. He is the new LSU head coach.

Welcome to the University of Texas Herman.

Herman is the new HC at Texas. ESPN has been reporting it all morning. Looks like the LSU thing was more rumor then substance.

It was actually quite true and was heating up all morning. Being reported Herman called LSU at 5AM to say he was leaning Texas. LSU also wasn't willing to pay the $6M per year asking price so they said thanks but no thanks. We won't wait.

It's believed Hermans camp leaked the almost deal to LSU. Possibly to get Texas to get moving. LSU wasn't pleased with this and coupled with the annual contract and possible bidding/waiting war they just moved on.

LSU got used.
Herman to UT was all but done before LSU ever offered anything.
These things happen over weeks, not days. Final negotiations were all that awaited.

Now LSU gets option C and the world knows it.
They shouldn't work a deal with Herman's agent ever again.
Complete sleazeball.

Herman gets 5m per at UT, not 6.
Jimbo wanted 3 years 20m to come to Baton Rouge.

I hope LSU wins SEC every year and Orgeron seems like a great dude but they did get done shady by Herman's agent.

Oh I agree it was done long ago. I think LSU was in play only if Strong somehow stayed. And yeah, $5M is what I posted for the Texas deal...$6M is what he was asking for from LSU and they passed.

And LSU has buy in from the current players, rumors of Kiffin as OC are swirling...but they will need a while before they are legit contenders for the SEC.

LSU didn't pass. LSU made an offer and TH waited on Texas to make an official offer and called LSU at 2AM to let them know.
Anyone whispering LSU passed is misleading you.

TH had basic parameters in place weeks ago but of course his agent was willing to listen to other offer in case Strong stuck around.
Miles was making 4.5m a year. TH barely gets a raise from that.
But he was always going back to UT.
Only job he'd want more is Ohio State(dude's from Cinci).

UT is messy in that boosters handle a lot of the dirty work. They have people who make calls and get agents to discuss salary and interest.
They did same with Strong. That's probably how he knew he was gonna be fired and was resigned to his fate before the TCU loss.

Also why UT never had a single 2nd candidate. It was all done before Strong was fired.
Charlie was option 2.

Actually it's been reported all day from numerous major outlets that Herman called LSU (at 5AM) to say he was leaning Texas but was still considering. That's when LSU passed and took the interim tag off O. So no one is misleading, these are the reports of the events that happened.

And thats what I said in regards to strong staying. Had he somehow kept his job Herman wanted a backup plan in place.

I'm not saying Herman's mind was already made up. I'm saying that when he pushed...LSU went with O as the new head coach. They weren't gonna wait around for a decision. I think we all knew that as long as Strong was gone Herman was going Texas.

response to that exact tweet:
#LSU spin job #Herman wanted #Texas he wanted the money sure he did but #Texas is his dream job
------------------------------
Herman told them he was taking Texas gig because he was already agreed. It wasn't a lean, lol.
LSU smartly reacted quickly and scheduled press ocnference to give Coach O the gig he BADLY wanted.
But EVERYONE KNOWS Alleva settled on choice 3.

Jimmy Sexton is the devil.

I don't disagree. It was his dream job, that was never a secret. I haven't seen anything yet saying when he called LSU he said he was taking the Texas job. It certainly may have happened, just going off of what was reported. And that's that he was still "in talks" when LSU made O the head coach. Either way it doesn't matter. I like O as a coach and have never had anything against LSU...wish them a ton of success, especially against Bama.

@jterrell

I very well could be wrong. Thought I would post.

"The feeling, according to Dellenger, was that Texas was Herman's first choice all along and that the negotiations with LSU were only used as a mechanism to push Texas into making a decision on Strong and possibly up their offer to Herman.

LSU was hoping to avoid a bidding war for Herman, according to Dellenger. But when reports broke that LSU was close to hiring Herman, Texas officials scrambled and met with Herman's agent late on Thursday."
