Report: Pats took less to trade Milton to the Cowboys out of respect

I don't know. I would fully expect any first-round pick to be given every chance to start. Plus, the Giants added Russell Wilson, Geno Smith was added by the Raiders this offseason and anyone who keeps up with it knows Pittsburgh has been after Aaron Rodgers.

I think he looks here and sees an older quarterback coming off his second major injury in the past few years. Plus, there's no backup other than a journeyman.
Understood. Other folks have made similar observations. However, the Giants and Steelers have not turned in their first-round pick yet. It should be quarterback both times but that is still a question mark. Joe Milton has conceded he has zero chance of winning the starting position, for any length of time (barring injury), with both New York and Pittsburgh. That is a solid strategy for someone recognizing their talent isn't as a starter.

Giants and Russell Wilson is a short-term relationship.

Geno Smith already had the backing of Pete Carroll before Carroll was hired by Las Vegas. FWIW, I will concede it was wise of Milton to scratch the Raiders off his list immediately after the Eagles for that reason.

I will enjoy seeing the Steelers actually lasso Aaron Rodgers. At first, I thought he and New York would be a good match. Injuries, and obvious decline in ability, and his narcissism proved me wrong. I seriously doubt Pittsburgh will be successful in getting more out of Rodgers than the Jets. Personally, I think Milton could have eventually replaced Rodgers in the short-term--whether through actual practice evaluation, game performance or probable injury.

I agree with what he sees as an opportune situation in Dallas. I simply do not think it should have been revealed publicly why Dallas seems to be his easiest route to realizing his career goals. The 'I always wanted to play for the Cowboys' would have been a more neutral, and less indicative, position for him to tell everyone why Dallas was his ideal destination.

-I just find it interesting as fans we trash sending a 4th rounder for Trey Lance who 2 years earlier was a top 10 pick with 4 games experience.

-Fast forward 2 years later and we applaud sending a 5th rounder for a player that was a 6 rounder 1 year earlier because they played decent in 1 game?

Anyone else see the irony in our fan logic? I'm rooting for Joe and hope he does well here and the trade ends up being a steal for the Cowboys. However, I just find it comical how we evaluate certain moves.
Agreed it's the usual delusion on this board after every trade or draft pick where said player is bound for glory. And then a year later is quietly released, buried on the depth chart, or actively sucking (looking at you Mazi) on the field.

Actually they have Grier and they like him.
Nobody likes Grier. He's on his 5th team in less than two years, has struggled to even stay on a practice squad, hasn't played a regular season snap since 2019, and signed for vet minimum. Really good chance that Grier is nothing more than the emergency guy this year....even then I'm skeptical the Cowboys want to use a roster spot on him.

Milton passes the eyeball test, but so did Vance. The issue is although Milton can throw a ball 80 yards he is ungodly inaccurate. Black version of Chad Hutchenson who was going to be the great white hope for Dallas per Jerry and replace Troy. Worth a draft choice swap.

This kid chose the Cowboys over, Steelers, Giants, Eagles, and Raiders........ can't blame him.

Sounds like his agent is fudging his bet that he has a better chance for a starting job behind Dak.
* compete with Dak within 2-3 years ( Dak's contract becomes less restrictive)
* No chance behind Hurts with Eagles
* Giants and Steelers probably would have been similar to Pats, playing behind a young franchise QB.
* Raiders are in the process of extending Geno few more years.

Compete with Dak in 2 to 3 months. Who cares about his contract LOL.

I don't know if the Giants and Steelers will take a QB in the first. But Milton may be looking at it like Wilson will be the Giants' starter this year and Rodgers when signed will be the Steelers' starter. Here, Dak is the starter, but he's coming off an injury that could keep him off the field, and he's missed a lot of games in the last five seasons (playing just two full seasons).

Why compete in Pittsburgh with a starter they just signed (if they get Rodgers) and a probable early draft pick (as the primary backup/starter in waiting) when you can go to Dallas with a starter showing signs of breaking down and no primary backup? Same with New York.

Both Wilson and Rodgers are on their last legs, but if I was Milton, I would think those teams plan to draft an heir apparent. I wouldn't think Dallas is because of its commitment contractwise to Dak. I'd think I'd have a very good chance of stepping in if he suffers an injury setback.

I'm hoping we grab some UDFA and he knocks Grier off the roster. I don't expect us to spend another pick on the position.

An injury setback is what both Milton and some observers are banking on. It is not a certainty though.

It is a possibility that is getting batted around a lot. I would wish someone in the media could corner Prescott and ask his opinion of Milton's opportunity IF he fell to injury again.

Honestly that should be the goal. I think Grier is fine as a #3/practice squad guy to have around, but he should have to compete for that role with a very late round pick or UDFA. I'd much rather have the young lottery ticket sitting on the PS unless he just falls on his face in camp.

I don't disagree with this. Call it youthful exuberance. I don't really think he meant it as a shot at Dak. He just gets a clean shot at the No. 2 job here with aging and injured starter ahead of him. No one, including him, expects Dallas to possibly spend an early pick on a QB.

I don't know why Prescott would answer that question. Like most players, he probably feels that he'll be healthy and if he is, then there won't be an opportunity for Milton.

And I don't know if Milton is specifically banking on a setback. I think he's banking on Dallas not drafting a successor to Dak, so he has a good shot at being that successor. The fact that Dak is older and coming off injury just means it could happen sooner rather than later.

Right, and I'm not opposed to still using a late-round pick on a QB since we don't have any less picks. You never know when you might find a QB, so Milton competing with another late-round rookie gives us two shots instead of one. We know what Grier is at this point.

I want Dallas to let him go. Keep your young QB in Milton and use the roster spot elsewhere.

We may need to go long in some key positions this year.

Pretty certain the last thing Prescott (or any of today's players) would offer a no comment. Perhaps sidestep the question, yes. Not replying? No.

There is one thing that is a certainty and that is Dallas players ALWAYS responding to questions posed to them. Prescott would likely offer a static comment instead.

Very well said.

I didn't necessarily mean he would say no comment. I would think he'd say we need a backup now that Cooper Rush is gone, and then go on an praise Rush profusely. Probably would say having Milton to compete with Grier for that job is a good thing.
