Coleco Announces New Cartridge-Based Console
By Nicole Carpenter
19 Dec 2015

In a partnership with Retro Video Game Systems, Coleco has announced a new cartridge-based console system called the COLECO Chameleon.

Chameleon comes a little over 30 years after the company's Colecovision, which made IGN's list of the top 25 video game consoles of all time. Released in 1982, Colecovision was known for bringing popular arcade games into the home.

Coleco claims the Chameleon will be "a versatile new video game system that serves as a modern day take on the classic game console," and is promised to "accurately play classic games." The system will also play new 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games, all in the spirit of the "golden age of gaming."

Sounds like a great niche item for classic gamers. The question I wonder, will they have the flexibility to use the older games popular in NES/Sega/Atari? Copyright issues, etc.? Otherwise, I would buy one and stock up on some older nostalgic types of games.

Collectors will buy it and a few will pick one of for nostalgia reasons, but as a business model. This is going to flop.

I use to love my colecovision back in the day. I even had the Atari adapter for it. I'm pretty sure I still have it packed away somewhere.

Depends on the price tag. If a reasonable price.

Just seems pointless. Unless they equip this with something that prevents converting these to ROMs, this will be a pirate dream console.

This is what I had back in the day. Loved every minute of Colecovision. Venture. Looping. Zaxon. The list goes on and on.

Never cared much for Colecovison game console.

I will say this though...If you are going to make a retro gaming system for us older gamers that plays old atari, colecovision or other older gaming consoles...how about giving us the original controllers or something very similar.

I don't want to play old atari games on a controller that looks like something nintendo 64 or later.

I got some old activision games for my phone...like Pit Fall and River Raid...just not the same playing them on a phone with on screen controllers.

I had a controller that you could hook to the TV that played old games like river raid (generic versions) but the controller was similar to the one above....Just not the same as playing with the old atari joysticks.

Raspberry Pi B+ or Pi 2 + 8GB microsd + USB controller + knowledge* = $40 to play thousands of old games.

Knowledge = another word for linux/retropie or piracy. Can't be discussed here.
