Nobody can disagree that last year was an epic disappointment but there was a lot of writing on the wall even prior to the Zeke suspension announcement.
We basically replaced our entire secondary with rookies. Obviously we were going to take a step back, defensively, even if it was only temporary.
We also lost Leary, any fan would admit that he wasn’t going to be easy to replace.
Many fans, including myself, believed that the team may take a step back due to these changes but be better in the long run for it. I still believed we would make the playoffs. I thought maybe 10 wins but we would be playing our best football late in the season.
Then we had the biggest distraction you could ever dream up hovering over the team for the whole season. Even before the suspension, our best player seemed detached from the team due to a looming suspension and weekly drama.
All of these factors led to a slow start and by the time we started playing with confidence, the Zeke suspension was upheld and then we know the rest of the story. The Eagles win the Super Bowl and suddenly we all forget that last season wasn’t supposed to be easy. You don’t replace 5 defensive starters and expect to not miss a beat.
The moral of my rant is that last year wasn’t that different than many of us projected. The reason we made all of those drastic defensive changes so it pays dividends this year and going forward. We were playing our best defense late in the season, as projected...we were just 1-2 games off of the target which I believe the Zeke suspension/drama is to blame for part of that(and Linehan).
Just because the Eagles won the Super Bowl shouldn’t distract anyone from the fact that this is a good football team that has more talent than 2016.
