Just wondering, and perhaps proscout would best be able to accurately answer this question.

After we took Ware, we had to dodge several teams who needed DE's (Minnesotta and Cincy if memory serves) in order to land Spears.

If one of those teams had taken Spears, or if Spears otherwise wasn't available . . . who would we have likely taken? Would we have taken the remaining DE (Erasmus James or David Pollack) or was there another player we had an interest in rated at near equal value?

i'm thinking all from the top of my head so i may be wrong....

but i know that San Diego took DE Luis Castillo in the late 1st after taking Merriman earlier.

if i remember correctly that pick was after we took Spears. so maybe he would have been on our radar?

Im more curuous about the 2006 draft and who was next up. I cant remember the exact list of needs after LB's but hindsight tells me we couldve taken Mangold and moved Gurode.

16 Miami Dolphins Jason Allen Safety Tennessee
17 Minnesota Vikings Chad Greenway Linebacker Iowa
18 Dallas Cowboys Bobby Carpenter Linebacker Ohio State
19 San Diego Chargers Antonio Cromartie Cornerback Florida State [9]
20 Kansas City Chiefs Tamba Hali Defensive End Penn State
21 New England Patriots Laurence Maroney Running back Minnesota
22 San Francisco 49ers (from Washington Commanders via Denver) Manny Lawson Linebacker North Carolina State
23 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Davin Joseph Guard Oklahoma
24 Cincinnati Bengals Johnathan Joseph Cornerback South Carolina
25 Pittsburgh Steelers (from New York Giants) Santonio Holmes* Wide Receiver Ohio State
26 Buffalo Bills (from Chicago Bears) John McCargo Defensive Tackle North Carolina State
27 Carolina Panthers DeAngelo Williams Running back Memphis
28 Jacksonville Jaguars Marcedes Lewis Tight End UCLA
29 New York Jets (from Denver via Atlanta) Nick Mangold Center Ohio State
30 Indianapolis Colts Joseph Addai Running back LSU
31 Seattle Seahawks Kelly Jennings Cornerback Miami (Florida) [10]
32 New York Giants (from Pittsburgh) Mathias Kiwanuka Defensive End Boston College

IIRC, Erasmus James would have been the selection. He was high on the Cowboys board that year, though I don't see how he fit the scheme.

I'm pretty sure we wanted Cromartie and not Mangold.

That sounds right. I would have liked Castillio more, but I think we liked James at DE after Spears.

I couldve seen Cromartie being rated low by the staff. He had a big time injury at FSU and might have even missed the entire year. He rose after a typical Cromartie combine.

Erasmus James was strictly a 4-3 end. Not a 3-4 DE or OLB

I recall that too. Castillo was the better fit but he may have been off our boards b/c he had a positive steroid test

I may be getting this wrong, but I talk that BP really liked Maroney
