RGIII didn't have a playbook in college?

It's slow around these parts, so I thought this could get some love in the Fan Zone, rather than being buried in another forum.

PFW article.

Titan receiver Kendall Wright, the 20th overall pick in the 2012 draft, has gotten a playbook.

It’s his first playbook.

Not just his first NFL playbook. His first playbook ever.

Baylor didn’t use a playbook, and Wright’s high-school team didn’t have one, either.

Source.

Wright played at Baylor, where coach Art Briles uses practices, film study and meetings to teach plays signaled into the offense. Nothing was written down and bundled into a playbook of any form. When Wright played quarterback in high school in Pittsburg, Texas, he had no playbook there, either.

Is this common in college? Or just an Art Briles thing? I don't see how it's feasible.

I hope this makes for a very steep learning curve and he fails miserably... I really wanted to be able to root for RG3, until the Commanders traded up.

If they were used to memorizing the plays from week to week, it might actually be easier to learn them from a playbook with everything written down.

Tim Couch didn't have a playbook either at Kentucky.

We are in the same boat, I hope he's a total bust.

Wright also said they still had to know over 300 plays at Baylor, I suspect it's just a different system of teaching. It probably only works for starters who get tons of reps, I'm betting their backups would be completely lost if forced onto the field and asked to run the usual plays.

It's different for RG3, because in college he didn't have to read the defense. The coach in the press box read the defense, and then signaled the play to the sideline, who signaled it to the offense on the field. In the pros, RG3 will have to read the defense on his own, and make the necessary adjustments at the line.

This is something that Dilfer, Warner and a few of the other talking heads on ESPN and NFLN talked about regularly before the draft.

Keep in mind that Cam did the same thing, and he looked pretty good out there last year.

Interesting.

Cam made a living out of scrambling out of the pocket and making a play. He put alot of stress on defenses having to account for him being a runner as well just like Tebow did in Denver. I suspect RG3 will be doing the same in his first year.

Cam and Tebow are big strong guys and could take the hard hits that were dealt to them. Infact, both of those guys ran over NFL defenders at times during the course of a game. If RG3 tries to do that he won't last very long, he is not big enough nor is he as physical as Cam and Tebow. He wil spend a lot of time on the sidelines, he's playing against MEN now. I like RG3 and I think he's a darn good talent but it wouldn't be wise for him to make a living trying to run in the NFL.

He's like Vick in that regard from what it looks like, but who knows? Romo is about the same size and he doesn't get hu.... Uh, nevermind.
