It's the first time in years that I'm seeing the Cowboys play the ball on defense. Chido's interception reminds me of a video I saw of the Seahawks DBs practicing tip drills and practicing intercepting balls other players tipped. I think that if this defensive line can come together, this defense could actually be really good.

Never understood why not play the ball.

As a CB most times you dont play the ball is when you are overmatched by the player you have to cover. In rare cases its just not your mentality or you are not used to it.

I think he knows this. He's just basically saying it's dumb not to.

It's just a CB or DB panicking in fear of losing the WR if he turns.

I dont think he knows.

One reason is that it has nothing to do with intelligence.

Brown seems to have a hard time looking for the ball. He almost always has his back turned. Maybe it’s because he’s always getting beat on the route but either way he gets beat or called for interference.

except Jourdan Lewis it seems

small sample size so far, but worried about regression from last season

you have to turn your head to do that most of our dbs for many years seem to play with their back to the ball, panic and grab late IE what Brown did in the last game..you have to turn around at some point to play the ball and whomever wasn't trying to get these guys to do that should have been let go along time ago..too many PI happen because a DB reacts late and panics when the WR goes for the ball that isn't even close but the CB starts flailing..its been horrible and dont get me started on the playing off the ball so much with no man etc..we seem to be one of the easiest teams to thow deep on and either get a late half or final drive of game get a PI or a deep completion that sets up winning scores..they never turn around!

Let's hope this is the case and becomes the norm.

However with such a small sample size, thus far, I am not going to buy in all the way yet.

I have seen some DBs covering WRs this preseason who have not turned around to look at the ball as well...just like in past seasons.
I have seen Brown start to get grabby again like he did in college (that was the knock on him) and a few times while in the NFL.

And I have no clue what is going on with Lewis who at one time looked great but now looks shaky.

Yup, I always find myself cringing and hoping that either the receiver drops the ball or the QB leads the receiver out of bounds because it never occurs to me that our guys will ever try to make a play on the ball.

In my estimation, playing the ball should be a primary expectation for any DB. It's a relief for me to see that Kris Richard made that a requirement for his DBs. As much as I like coach Richard, I think it's quite possible that he's made a big mistake replacing Lewis with Brown. It seems to have affected Lewis in a very unfortunate way. It may be something that could best be corrected in the near future. Coach Richard is a smart fellow. I can't help but wonder if he'll change his mind about that decision in the near future.

Most here understand this. You can play the receivers hands but you don't get INTs that way much at all.

Lewis is probably overthinking things since he apparently is 4th on the depth chart. He should know that he is virtually guaranteed to make the team, so he should go out there extremely confident like he was last season instead of playing to not make a mistake so much.

I'm thinking Kris Richard is not a fan of Jourdan Lewis right now.

What I noticed on a couple of the long sideline plays is that the CB didn't recognize in time that the WR was starting to slow down and ended up running into the WR.

That's slightly different than what we've seen in the past from guys like Scandrick that recognized the ball was coming but just couldn't seem to always get their head around.

In the 1st PS game there was a play where Brown ran into the WR. The WR did a good job of keeping his hands down until just become the ball arrived.

It seems that different coaches teach this differently to some extent. Obviously the CB shouldn't have his head turned too early or he'll lose speed and/or the WRs location.

I remember some CB years ago saying that he watched the WRs head. Once the WR turned his head back to look for the ball, the CB would delay just slightly and then turn his head. He said if you turn your head immediately that WRs would sometimes do a head-fake prior to some type of route adjustment (cut inside from a sideline route, double-move on other routes).

I've seen both Brown and Lewis turn their head in practice with no problem on many snaps. They probably know the Cowboys WRs tendencies better than opponents.

Lewis played a style in college that I knew would need adjustment in the NFL. I would call it an extreme trail technique. He was actually very good at looking back and finding the ball. He would trail behind (under) the WR and then accelerate when the ball was in the air. It's a good method for getting INTs but there needs to be a Safety over the top. Lewis had the speed in college to do it without always having Safety help but in the NFL his speed is not elite.
