What happens in Vegas ... shouldn't happen during the stretch drive of the playoffs.

That's not some dorky sportswriter talking. That's the gold-standard opinion of a guy possessing two Super Bowl rings, a bust in Canton and the best reputation of any athlete to ever play in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo jets off to Las Vegas alongside Miles Austin with the New York Giants looming and - presto - controversy. Last time Romo sneaked off before a big Giants game - to Cabo with Jessica Simpson in '08 - he reasoned that "I thought I was making a good decision not going to Vegas and drinking ... " Right or wrong, this latest excursion opens Romo up for more harsh criticism in the event he pratfalls Sunday at New York.

Big deal or much ado about nuthin'?

Roger Staubach, your thoughts ...
"I'm a Tony Romo guy, but from a fan's standpoint it's a mistake," Captain America told me yesterday from his commercial real estate office at Jones Lang LaSalle in North Dallas. "Perception is reality, and it just doesn't look good. I don't agree with needing to get away from football for a couple of days. I think there's crucial value in keeping the football mind-set. Coach Landry would have never given us three days off at this time of year. This is the playoff drive, and time is precious. He would have us at the facility doing something, maybe just running around in shorts. But something to keep us together, to keep our minds on football."
Staubach, whom I'll feature in a Dallas Observer cover story later this month, also talked about Jerry Jones' firing of Tom Landry, his potential involvement with the Texas Rangers and the outlook for this year's Cowboys.

Follow me ...

*On his name being mentioned as a potential investor in a new Rangers' ownership group that would allow Tom Hicks to continue as the club's majority voice:
"It's getting complicated. If anything I'll wind up as a sort of local board member. But a minority co-owner or savior? No, I'm not that guy."

*On Jones firing Landry in 1989:
"I've forgiven him, sure. Because it wasn't totally Jerry's fault the way it happened. He gets a lot of blame and a lot of fault that is undeserved. People forget that (former owner) Bum Bright wasn't happy with Tom at all. A change was going to be made regardless."

*On this year's Cowboys:
"In the NFC you've got the Vikings and Saints clearly at the top, but the Cowboys are right there. They've got the talent and the ability to get to the Super Bowl. They can be this year's Arizona Cardinals."

I agree with roger, not sure if roger was aware or not, but as i understand it, romo took treatment friday morning, then went to vegas, then romo was back from vegas sometime saturday, to get more treatment. While romo was at some beneficial charity work too in vegas.

So, if all that is true, romo only spent one day in vegas. I understand what roger is saying, in a way he is right and in a way romo was right, wade did give the team 3 days off. Thats on wade if it backfires on the team, but the team did need some rest to recooperate.

I think the big key thing here is what happened Monday, wade saw that the team was out of conditioning some, so he had them run extra. Now, that with the team being out of conditioning was on the players and for wade allowing that to happen, but the team did need some rest.

So, its a catch 22, your wrong and right. So, who is to know?

Again, im ok with it, but say if somehow the vikings lose some games and we get a bye week, the team needs to stay in dallas-arlington and stay focused on football. Loosen up sure, but nothing with football on their mind.

No more bye stuff or get away when big games start getting close.

Romo went for a charity event, but I think he should hold off on anything like that, that isn't in the local area. Traveling is tiring. Good cause or not, you have to measure your actions, because your physical state is extremely important in a physical game like football. Which is why you aren't suppose to participate in boom boom the night before the game! ;)

I didn't see Cabo as bad as the media made it out to be, and I don't see this as bad either, but just as an unnecessary burden on the body when your season is on the line.

Even with the Giants reeling, that doesn't mean the Cowboys can't lose. If they lose this game, then follow it up with losses to the Saints, Eagles and even Commanders/ Chargers. The Cowboys could easily be looking in from the outside in the playoff race.

they were gone 14 hours in all.... they flew in for a charity event, thats it...

whats the difference between that and what all the other players probably did.. go to a local club... but atleast romo had his new #1 WR with him... i wouldn't be suprised if they got more game discussion and film study done then the other players..

Perception is reality.

I have always hated this statement. The thing I hate most of all about it is that it has become true when it shouldn't be a lot of the times. There are too many people out there that think the perception or in many cases the mis-perception is reality. They can't step back and actually look at the facts. The media guys push this approach. Take the guy who did the interview with Staubach. Why even ask the question in the first case? That is forwarding an agenda and making the perception of Romo going to Vegas as a problem into a problem.

if Brees/Ryan/Rodgers would have done it they would all be talking about how he took time out of his schedule and donated his time to charity and how the NFL needs more guys like this.....

I don't think most people get that the statement is intended to be ironic. And people think it literally just means that perception is reality.

Oh well, perception is reality I guess. ;)

This will blow up to a huge story if the Cowboys lose to the midgets. I expect the media to hype the Cowboys annual losing in December. This story just adds fuel to the fire if things don't go well.

Romo will never get the monkey off his back as long as the Cowboys lose late in the season. It is time to step up, can they do it this year....

After we beat NY on Sunday they'll have to go looking for another thing to bag on for the next week. It won't matter what happens they're going to do their best to write whatever garbage they can to try and get in the heads of fans and players.

Best to ignore the vast majority of this junk this month.

Sorry Roger its not 60's or 70's anymore

I would advise people to listen to Roger Staubach. He is a class act, very smart, and a proven winner. He is very successful in life (football and business), so take a minute and at least think about what he is saying before dismissing it.

Um, "Vegas" and "partying" existed in the 60's and 70's. You either have self-discipline or you don't. In Tony and Miles' defense, this charity trip was booked months in advance, and they weren't there for very long. Had they been sent to Oklahoma City, no one would have batted an an eye. If they erred in any way, it was combining business with pleasure (and being photographed partying). Pleasure can wait 'til the off-season.

I agree.

The thing that Roger said that bothers me most was a dig at the coaching staff. How that Tom Landry would have never given them three days off in a playoff stretch.

I think Wade could learn more from Rogers comments than Tony. :banghead:

It doesn't fit their point of view, so don't expect them to.
