Rick Gosselin: Taylor Mays will be a better safety in the NFL than he was at USC

Sportday NFL writer Rick Gosselin chatted with readers Wednesday afternoon and answered a number of questions about this month's NFL draft, the Cowboys and other football-related questions. A sampling of those questions:

Steve asks...: What does your intelligence gathering tell you about S Taylor Mays? Will he be a better safety in the pros than in college?

Rick Gosselin: I think Taylor Mays will be a better safety than he was at Southern Cal because the NFL will ask him to do more. He has the measurables to do whatever you ask of him with that size (6-3, 230) and speed (4.34). But comparisons to Roy Williams seem to have some NFL teams running scared. So Mays has a sliding value right now. But I think some team is going to get a really good player at a great value when he finally comes off the board.

Steve asks...: I think the Cowboys need a WR. A few years ago you predicted the Cowboys would draft Bowe (now a Chief). Which WR would you spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick on?

Rick Gosselin: The value at wide receiver is in the third round where there may be 8-10 taken. A Scott Long, Marcus Easley or Carlton Mitchell would be interesting picks at the bottom of the third. They all have size & speed and the Cowboys have always liked that combination.

VR asks...: Thinking special teams... two of the Cowboys' biggest holes are at kicker and kick returner. What might be their options to fill each in the mid to late rounds?

Rick Gosselin: Brett Swenson of Michigan State is the top-rated kicker on the draft board. He'll be a later rounder but I don't see the Cowboys drafting a kicker -- not with just six draft picks. Too bad Steve Hoffman isn't still around to find one for the Cowboys. This is a deep, deep draft for kick returners and most of them play positions. A Javier Arenas would be attractive. So would a Jordan Shipley, Marty Gilyard, Perish Cox and an Antonio Brown. I think you'll see a kick returner turn up somewhere in those six draft picks -- but he will come disguised as a position player.

Matthew in Fort Worth asks...: When you grade the Cowboys draft this year would you be brave enough to include your recommended pick at each selection? That way we can grade your picks a couple of years down the road.

Rick Gosselin: My Top 100 board will be posted the day before the draft. My position series starts this Sunday and I'll have my Top 15 players at each position in print. That will give you an idea how I feel about the players on this draft board.

Eh...that's a weak answer by Gosselin. Of course we know Mays has all the measurables in the world to do whatever you ask him to do on paper. If the Cowboys had an All-Pro caliber safety like Woodson to mentor Mays then I'd feel a little better about his chances but he's coming here to learn from the likes of Alan Ball and Pat Watkins (no disrespect to Sensabaugh b/c we don't even know if he's coming back as of now)

It's not that weak of an answer, Goose says that he thinks whatever team takes Mays will end up with a "good player".

Goose is good at knowing where players should be picked based upon his contacts in the NFL. However Goose has never been known for his excellent player evaluation skills.

well if most of the 32 teams put a 1st round grade on him...

We'll see where teams rank Mays when Goose's final, top 100 comes out.

As far as i know Goose doesn't evaluate ****, he just talks to people who do.

He does a little bit after the draft. Tries to put his own spin on things.

He's right about a run on WR's in the 3rd.
At least half of these guys will go there.

LaFell
Price
Ford
Gilyard
Shipley
Mitchell
Decker
Easley
Long
Briscoe
Roberts
Cooper

Translation:Of course not, I'm a chicken****!

he can't be much worse....

seriously though, he is a slightly faster version of Roy Williams. I am befuddled as to why people keep mocking Mays to Dallas. We just dumped a clone of a player for a S than has CB-like cover abilities and it was a COLOSSAL success, why would we go back to having a S that can't cover anyone? Nonsense. I can see Mays having some success in the right system but it will be more in run support and nickel packages, it won't be because he's a cover, ball-hawking SS or FS. He should not even be on Dallas' draft board. I'd rather have Nate Allen, MB, or Robert Johnson (besides the obvious Berry and Thomas of course). Or even better, give me Atogwe. I'd be very content with Sensabaugh, Atogwe, and Ball handling the S positions.

Mays does not have the coverage skills including basic ones to be a good safety IMO. Did you watch him at the combine? He can't turn his hips well enough. He's just not fluid.

Only slightly faster than Roy, eh? :laugh2:
