Federal judge rules Ricky has to repay Dolphins $8.6 million
By Alex Marvez

Ricky Williams is about to pay the price for early retirement.

A federal judge Tuesday upheld an arbitrator's ruling that Williams must repay the Dolphins $8.6 million in salary for violating terms of his contract by walking out last July.

U.S. District Judge James Cohn heard an appeal Friday by the NFL Players Association arguing the recoupment provisions in Williams' contract violated Florida law.

The NFLPA also argued that Williams shouldn't have to repay $3.3 million in signing bonus to the Dolphins that was given to him by New Orleans when the tailback was drafted in 1999.

Williams, though, had agreed to the recoupment provisions in his contract after being traded from the Saints to the Dolphins in 2002.

"[Williams' attorneys] failed to establish that the arbitrator manifestly disregarded the law or that enforcement of that award would violate public policy, or that the award is arbitrary and capricious," Cohn wrote in his decision.

Despite the ruling, the Dolphins may have difficulty in securing the money because Williams may not have the cash to refund.

Last year Williams offered differing comments in several media outlets about whether he would refund the money if he was forced to repay the Dolphins.
