Rico DE Idea

Yeah, I dunno much about Rico. I was just looking at his attributes, and I personally thought that he'd make a rather decent DE, if he were to have a go at it. Especially since he'd have all training camp to have a go at our oline. Though, I do understand now that it would be more than just that for him to be successful there.
The kid is as raw as you can get
I’m betting someone had to show him how to put his pads on
But he has the athletic ability a creative coach could use in certain spots till he learned the position

Yes, and the sticky wicket about his situation here is that Garrett isn't exactly a creative chap, is he?

I think the stubbornly think every TE has to be a complete TE and a blocker first
Blocking is important but I think I could find 8-10 times a game I could get something out of a pure receiving TE myself

Oh, no doubt, and, unlike other teams, we DO use a FB and regularly at that. To me, that almost negates the need of a blocking TE, doesn't it? I mean, if your FB can do the same job, then wouldn't that free up your TE to catch the ball?

We haven’t used a FB much but I suspect that will change with a FB who is also a good receiver

We know he kid has a great leap and good hands. He just needs to get the blocking down and at the very least he’s a viable red zone threat.

Learning to block was always his best bet to get on the field. More so with WItten and Hanna leaving, but he should have been focusing on blocking the last two years so he could compete. He may be passed up by the new guy.

Well, I'm sure a lot of you are probably tired of seeing constant Rico Gathers threads. However, this one that I'm posting is actually a slight departure from the normal Gathers threads. I've floated this idea around other threads, but is Rico's best position really TE? Yes, he's absolutely lethal in the red zone when healthy, but is that alone really reason enough to put him in at a roster spot? What if we could use him for more than just that? Here, let me show you what this fox has in mind.

I'm someone that doesn't exactly like the Texans very much. However, I don't think one can really question how good Watt was when healthy. Do you all recall when they'd get down near the goal line, and they'd put Watt in at TE? That's sort of what I have in mind for Gathers. I think he'd be better as a defensive end who comes in during red zone situations to play TE. That way, you are using him in a position of need while also having the luxury of using him in the red zone.

Why put him at DE? Well, let's look at what we know about him. He's a tall and hefty chap. I saw that he's working to get to 280 lb. That'd give him some sheer power to try and blast through offensive linemen. But, he's also a relatively quick boy. He'd have to be to be a basketball player, and he's shown his quickness last preseason. That quickness would make blocking him a sticky wicket. His size alone would make him very difficult to throw the ball around or over. Not to mention that he can jump like a gazelle. So, if you try to throw it over him, then you'll be lucky if he bats it down. Yet, with his hands, he might just come down with some INTs. So, now you've got a takeaway machine in him. Pair him up with DLaw and Taco, and I reckon that we'd have a really devastating set of DEs. Not saying that he'd be JJ Watt, but you get the general idea. If the coaches were to let him have a go at DE, I think they'd be relatively surprised at how good I think he can be there. I do hope that our coaches will give him a go there.

What say you? Think Rico Gathers would make a good DE?

lets start with the first assumption you make.

How do we know Rico is absolutely leather in the red zone? Who has he gone up against to give you that silly opinion?

Before we even entertain the rest of the post, lets clear this mess up and go from there.

No, not now.

The Cowboys discussed trying him at DE when he first arrived but decided TE was the best option.

Moving from DL to TE in the redzone is much easier than a TE trying to play some snaps on defense.

Once the team starts moving young players to different positions, they rarely succeed.

Rico needs as many snaps at TE as possible this offseason. He needs to be completely focused on playing TE.

His best alternate position will be as a kick blocker on field goals next to David Irving.

Rico has been up to 290 with the Cowboys according to Rico himself in his first year. He is already one of if not the biggest TE in the NFL. It seems like it would be best if he keeps his weight on the low side.

His issues blocking have not been due to a lack of power. All of his blocking issues have been mental mistakes.

Sorry he gets one try and being a “developmental prospect” there is plenty of super athletic body’s and players every year and draft to waste it moving him

Not to mention idk if he enjoys just living the NFL player lifestyle more than living a life to better him and his craft

I don’t think Rico like contact. Probably why he doesn’t block
I say just let him go and end this.

I doubt the coaches are looking at Rico as anything other than te. 3 years now. Time to show up or go home.

Rico a DE. Of course not. We are more likely to get a 3rd round pick for Chaz Green!

It's entirely possible that Rico Gathers simply isn't a professional level football player.

I figure if Rico don't like blocking he won't like getting blocked, so maybe he should just move out to WR.

Oh, they did? That I didn't know.
