Top 5 Cowboys' position battles heading into OTAs/training camp (thelandryhat.com)

This might be the battle that most of us will be focusing on and for good reason. Dallas lost a very good pass rusher in Randy Gregory and they’ve done a lot of work on finding someone to replace him quickly.

Dorance Armstrong has been with the team since being drafted in 2018, so the Cowboys know what they are getting from him. He also showed a lot of improvement last season which lead to a new contract with the team. Dante Fowler Jr. has a history with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn going back to college and during his time with the Atlanta Falcons. Then, you have second-round pick Sam Williams who was personally worked out by Quinn, and someone who Quinn fought for the Cowboys to take.

All three have a different set of pass rush skills. Armstrong has been seen as a backup but there are signs that he is taking the next step and is worthy of taking over the starting position. Fowler Jr. has the most experience in the league and his time with Quinn overall can’t be overlooked. Williams looks and plays like a freak of nature and is someone who some believe wasn’t allowed to show his full potential in college thanks to the scheme he was in and how they used him. This one is a real toss-up and one that we all need to keep a very close eye on.

The offensive line is the key . Can Tyler Smith with a # 1 invested in him help solidify a weakness in the Cowboy OLine the guard spot opposite Martin .

And the center position has to be wide open for competition not just handed out. If the line improves getting rid of 2 starters from last season which was a good move by the FO it will go a long way to wins & losses.

Gregory was the most overrated player on the team. Plus, he was 100% unreliable. We will replace his production fairly easily.

Not sure what you mean by overrated. He got a $14 million per year deal, which is not that much compared to the top pass rushers in the league. In fact, I believe his contract is 22nd highest in the league for Edge rushers. Have you considered how having Gregory on the right side helped Micah Parsons?

I get Gregory is a bit of a knucklehead, but he is a very good edge rusher.

For contract he's 14th in the league. But his 14M per year is 25th. Which is what I think you were talking about. Different sites show slightly different results.

All 3 will get plenty of opportunities to show their worth to determine who starts. Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler obviously have a leg up due to seniority and experience, but I have a feeling Sam Williams will eventually take over at some point this season. He's the most talented of the 3. Dan Quinn certainly seems to think so...

True but he did have special kind of skills in pass rush and as disrupter but 6 sacks alone while it doesn't tell the entire story shouldn't be hard to replace. he did have a lot of pressures and was decent playing the run. he was inconsistent though.i believe fowler takes the lead in replacing him, hes had better career.

I'm excited about the potential of Sam Williams. I think he is going to make noise early.

Off topic, I can't WAIT for Damone Clark to get on the field.

This defense has a real shot to be the among the best in the league by next year.

Good stuff . . . all in all, I'm especially encouraged with our options to make the most of the talent we have at hand this year. If one or two of our guys get pooped and need a breather, we'll have a good supply of others to fill in and apply enough pressure to deck the QB. :)
