Like everyone, I questioned the run calls late inside the 10-yard line. Especially the second one. I get trying to get the first down and run the clock down. But that pitch play was asinine.
However.....that is distracting from a much, much larger issue. Why was the run game so bad last night? There were two GLARING reasons that stood out amongst the fray.
Travis Frederick and Connor Williams. Both were getting blown off the line of scrimmage repeatedly. It was ugly to watch.
Frederick must not have his strength back yet. He's not the same dude. And Williams just isn't any good as a guard. They were getting eaten alive all night long. Even when they ran away from that side, Minnesota would just set the edge and wait for backside help from the gaping Williams-Frederick hole. It was a disaster.
Immediately, the coaching staff needs to insert Looney and Sua-Filo into the starting lineup. As in, right now.
I'm concerned that Zeke has lost a step, maybe even a significant one, but last night was not about that. He just had nowhere to run.
Mike Zimmer obviously was ganging up on the run to make Dak beat him, but it should never be that successful, especially when Dak was so effective through the air last night. The run game should have been there, and it wasn't. Because of that weak middle of the line.
Make the change now. It just so obvious.
