I have wondered whether Julius Schwartz was inspired by Chuck Yeager when he re-imagined the fictional Hal Jordan/Green Lantern character. Jordan was a fearless test pilot and created within a decade of Yeager breaking the sound barrier.

Just musing about what might have been an indirect tribute. Rest in peace, Mr. Yeager.
