Not sure which forum this should be in, political, NFL, etc... but NFL great and former Vice Presidential nominee Jack Kemp passed away today.

RIP to a good man.

Gridiron hero politician Kemp dies

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Jack Kemp, a 1960s American football hero who later became a US congressman and vice-presidential nominee, died Saturday, his spokeswoman Bona Park said.

Kemp had announced in January that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was undergoing tests but gave no other details. Park and Kemp's longtime friend and former campaign adviser Edwin J. Feulner said only that Kemp died after a lengthy illness.

Kemp played quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress, and left the House of Representatives for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.

Eight years later, after serving a term as President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary, he was Bob Dole's running-mate in a presidential campaign in 1996.

Kemp's 13 gridiron seasons included leading the Bills to American Football League titles in 1964 and 1965, the final two seasons before the Super Bowl began ahead of the league's 1970 merger with the National Football League.

Bummer. Kemp was one of the top QBs in the old AFL. But he led a very full life and had a lot to show for his having been alive.

R.I.P. Jack.

My father always talked about what a great player he was.

By today's standards he would not be considered very good as he threw a lot more INTs than TDs but he was exciting to watch back then and he was a winner. He started out in L.A. with the Chargers and then they moved to San Diego. He went on to Buffalo after that and won a couple of AFL Championships there after losing twice with the Chargers. The fact that he took his team to the championship game 4 times in 6 years is pretty good.

RIP Jack. Gave much to his country, both as a player and a public servant.

Farewell, Jack. Thanks for your contributions to the game.

Dang. All the golden oldies are dying up. He was a pretty good QB in a light's out league. People forget he kept Lamonica on the bench.

I said in another thread that I thought this news would hit you hard, that Kemp sounded like your kind of politician to me...

I second what you just said, Danny... this country could use more Jack Kemps...
