G Rivera to retire as Packer

Published: Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Guard Marco Rivera, who spent nine seasons in Green Bay, informed the team on Monday that he intends to officially retire as a Packer.

Rivera played for the Packers from 1996-2004 before spending two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He did not play in the NFL last year after being released by the Cowboys a month before training camp due to back problems.

"Marco was the consummate professional," Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson said. "His toughness and approach to the game of football provided a great model for his teammates."

During his tenure in Green Bay, Rivera played in 99 consecutive games, starting at guard for seven straight seasons, and was selected to three Pro Bowls. In the last 40 years, the only Green Bay guard with a longer starting streak is Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer (1958-1966).

"To retire as a Packer in my book is the greatest thing you can say as a football player in the NFL," Rivera said. "It's an honor and privilege to retire and become a member of the Packers alumni with all the great players I played with and those that came before me."

Good for him ..... a man should retire where his heart truly lies.

Brett Favre: "Huh?"

He wasted a lot of Jerry's money.

Well, he offered to give back the signing bonus when he hurt his back. Of course, if Jerry had said OK, Rivera would've died on the spot.
:lmao2:

Rivera had the knowledge and attitude. He just had a bad back along with it. Everything I heard said he was great for the other players. Could be a good coach.

Rivera had bad luck here -- but if you listen to the comments of the guys who played on the line with him, you'll see that he certainly helped in their development. We may not have hit on Rivera but he helped the Gurode and Columbo get over the hump.

Good observation, abersonc! I credit the success of those two that you mentioned by having Rivera here. There is no telling what might have been had he not ruined his back on that treadmill.

No suprise, he really didnt play that much here. His heyday was in Green Bay.

Yeah all he did was steal money... who cares honestly. Another wasted signing, Bill Parcells wanted him of course.
