Who would ever have thought that a tightend would ever perform this good and make this kind of money.
I guess the next super player will have to be a linbacker/saftey hybrid to cover these tightends

The New England Patriots have signed All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski to a six-year, $54 million contract extension and is now the highest paid tight end in NFL history, according to a league source.

The contract includes an $8 million signing bonus.

Later, Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the deal via his Twitter account.

"Congrats to Gronk on his extension with the Patriots," Rosenhaus wrote. "My thanks to Mr.Kraft & Coach Belichick for making this possible."

The Patriots rewarded Gronkowski after his emergence as one of the top young tight ends in the game.

The former University of Arizona standout had two years and $1.175 million remaining on his rookie contract.

Brilliant move by the patriots signing him this early for so cheap.

They're extending a 2 year deal by adding 6 years at 9 million a year at age 23 with only 13 million guaranteed.

We extended a 2 year deal for Witten by adding 5 years at 7.4 million a year at age 29 with 17 million guaranteed.

Which would you prefer?

It doesn't have to be about preferring one over the other. Both are good signings and deals by the respective teams.

Surprised it didn't cost more. He's a top 5 receiving threat in the NFL and has another 10+ years in him barring injury.

I gotta say I'm not sure how good this guy truly is.

Don't get me wrong I'm not dissing him. He's a good receiving TE. But like Wes Welker, how much of Gronk's greatness is due to the guy throwing the ball and the offensive system in place that makes the most of the TE position?

Obviously there's no right answer. Everyone is going to have a different opinion, which is OK too.

From NFL.com

Including his final two years of his rookie deal, which he still has $1.115 million due, into the average, and Gronkowski will earn $6.89 million over the next eight years.

Sounds to me like the Pats got a steal. That's the advantage/chance you take when you resign a player after 2 years though.

I don't have a problem with either one.

Unless you're saying you don't believe Witten is worth his money in which case I wouldn't take you seriously in the first place.

I said when he was a Freshman at UA that he was going to be one of the absolute best TEs in the NFL.

Great question. I'll get back with you after Brady retires.

Him and Jimmy Graham came out of nowhere. I kinda dont like how the position is evolving. You really can't shut them down.

This sort of signing is why the Patriots are consistently excellent.

Our failure to orchestrate similar deals is why we are usually mediocre.

We rarely have ever signed anyone to a below market value deal like this one - go look at the horrific extension given to Ratliff last year and the just scary one given to Witten as both of them hover around 30. The Pats locked up a younger and better player for less guaranteed money. Jerry falsely believes he can buy loyalty or that he can curry devotion from players by giving them above market deals. All it has done is breed an attitude of selfishness and "business decisions".

I am so thankful that Garrett has come along and tried to right this ship but he should have put his foot down when Jerry started talkikng about extending Ratliff when he had 2 years left on his current deal and was coming off of a down year. What made Rat special was that he could play NT in the 3-4 on running downs okay but was a very good pass rusher, too. Well he nabbed two sacks on 800 snaps last year which is Spears type production.

This year I hope we get around to extending Sean Lee but with a contract that is appropriately valued and with some protection for the team against injury given his past history. I'm thinking about 6 years at $36M extension with $9M guaranteed (due to injury) and maybe a big roster bonus after 3 more years of play.

No, there is a right answer.

And you're wrong.

Tom Ciskowski really screwed up with those extensions.

Something like that.

I agree with much of what you say here. The contract extension for Barber along with the Roy Williams deal (both of them) made me facepalm.

But they have had some good contracts. Speaking of Ratliff, his first contract was a sweet deal for the Cowboys. And I think Romo's deal was good from the club's perspective too.

Time will tell on the contract's extended or signed this year for folks like Livings, Sensi and Scandrick.

There isn't a team in the league outside of maybe the Commanders who have been saddled with more bad contracts over the years than the Cowboys.

I wonder why that is.

Funny cause I thought the deals they got for Romo, Ratliffs first one, Ware's current deal, and even the ones they've had for Witten his whole career have been dang good deals for Dallas.

And I don't understand why Witten being 30 is viewed as some sort of issue with a 5 year deal.

Shannon Sharpe played till a pretty prime age.

Tony G. is still playing at a nice old age.

I'm guessing some how Witten isn't going to be allowed to?

Sometimes the lack of respect Witten gets from some people around here is just plain stupid.

He was very close to being the most dominant player in the league at his specific position last year.

Raiders?

He's my keeper in a FFL league this year.

I said it halfway through last season and someone laughed. Then he continued to score more than just about everyone else.

Having a TE in FFL who can put up those kind of numbers on a weekly basis is such a huge advantage that it isn't even funny.

Sucks because I have McCoy as one of my backs and I really do not want to have to lose him.
