Just in case you missed this one, the upstart United Football League held its “premiere” draft on Thursday, each of the four teams selecting 24 players following the league-wide workouts held in Orlando and Las Vegas.
Of the 96 players selected, four had ties with the Cowboys. Running back Tyson Thompson, the local kid from Irving who spent three seasons with the Cowboys (2005-07), was selected by Las Vegas.
The Orlando entry into the UFL grabbed three former Cowboys: Quarterback Brooks Bollinger, the third guy last year; former starting offensive tackle Rob Petitti (2005), a former sixth-round pick – and get this, taken 15 picks sooner than seventh-rounder Jay Ratliff; and last year’s training camp fullback Ronnie Cruz. The teams own these players’ rights if they decide to sign with the UFL, and then hope to fill out their rosters later this summer with players who don’t hook on with an NFL team.

I know it's a long shot...but if this league can succeed, I wonder if it could effect the overall depth of teams in the NFL. For instance, Bobby Carpenter might be a career #2 in the NFL, but might be a star and get paid just as much if not more in the UFL. Would guys in that type of situation make the jump?

The QBs who are like Bollinger and even Losman who would be third string QBs are probably likely to take that kind of jump. Would you rather take the NFL minimum to hold a clipboard or show you can play leading to another opportunity.

If this league is done right and they start angling for a "minor league" feeder to the NFL angle instead of direct competition, they might last. Most other sports have some sort of minor support system. NFL Europe was just too unmanageable and at the end most teams never bothered to use it as a serious developmental league anyways. There is more of a real NFL feel to it than Europe IMO. They have some pretty good coaches and their management isn't that far separated from the NFL.

My problem is that play is going on during the NFL season. I rather see people that start for a real NFL team. I hate preseason games can you imagine a season of this mess.

Is the UFL a flag league?

I actually liked Thompson as a returner for a little bit. He did have great straight line speed but had no "wiggle" to him.

I never liked Pettiti....another brain cramp by the Parcell's scouting department.

Pettiti was a SIXTH rd pick. Getting a whole season of starting from him is a lot more then you usually get (not saying it was a good season- though in the first half he was usually decent, got worse as the season went along)
Pettiti was thought to have late second rd talent and supposedly the only knock was a problem with weight. It was after we got him that it became apparent that he probably does not have the foot speed to play tackle.
Kind of surprised no one tried him at guard.

I wish they wouldn't do it while the NFL season is going. They definately shouldn't try and use it as competition to the NFL cause they'll simply wind up folding, and it will happen rather quickly.

I think we're years away from any UFL player getting anything close the the NFL minimum.

Uh, Rob Pettiti started games, Mike Doss was a good player, Adam Archuleta was a Pro Bowler at one point if I'm not mistaken, Cruz was borderline on the Cowboys last year, J.P. Losman started last year...

I'm not saying they are starting calibre players in the NFL, but depth players certainly.

He was a 7th rounder wasn't he?

It won't last no matter WHEN they play. Just a matter of time.
