How do you guys feel about Rob, telling the corners to just go out and play? If they feel lke jamming go ahead. If they rather play off go ahead. Play inside technique? Go ahead

I kinda like it....maybe that's why (adding the QB pressure as well) our corners haven't been giving up big plays.

And Newman is virtually shut down all season

Gives his defense an added element of randomness that makes it difficult to attack with the right route combo.

These are reins, as in "free rein":

This is Free Reign:

I like whatever he's doing cause it's working at this point in time. I trust that the guy knows what he's doing.

I thought in the Rams game they looked a little more aggessive. I have always thought that Jenkins is a better CB when he is being physical.

As long as they don`t line up 12 yards deep , like they did under Wade , I`m fine with it. The 12 yard cushion gave away too many first downs.

I don't understand - everyone gets rain free, all you have to do is put out a bucket and wait for it to fill up. Ryan isn't "giving" them anything...

p.s. you spelled rain wrong!

Agreed. It's just whether the refs let him be physical or not. Last year they called every little ticky tack contact on him and I think it made him play scared. That was part of the problem.

Same here. Had I read any other DC was doing this I'd think, well how the hell does that work? Don't you need some sort of organization? And don't the DB's need to play to their help?

Whatever works.

Oh, the bait and switch trick.

For a while ah thought Newman et. al were gonna have to sit through a Free Reign concert.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. If he is letting the CBs have all that freedom, hopefully they are at least telling Sensy and Elam what they going to do on any given play. I figure that is what is happening, with Sensy and Elam already being familiar with how each CB plays, or it would be a disaster back there. Communication is the key.

It's really all about communication in the secondary, which is one of the things I like most about what he's doing with the defense. If one corner is going to press in a one-deep coverage call, then he's got to signal for safety help and for the other side to likely play off to prevent being beat deep.

So I don't think the corners aren't quite free to do whatever they want, but they have some liberty to make adjustments based on how they think it's best to handle the receivers on the play.

The more our secondary is forced to communicate about such things, the less chance of blown coverages like we've had in the past where it appeared no one in the secondary knew what the other guys were doing.

It goes the other way. Sensy and Elam let the corners know where the help is going to be, and they use that information to determine which routes they can try to jump.

Here's an illuminating interview with Jenkins.

No offense to Ball, but replacing him with Elam has been the one change that has really helped the defense. Not only is Elam more familiar with Ryan's scheme, Ball is just a better corner than a safety. He's probably one of the better fourth corners in the league.
