Robert Griffin III will be first NFL player with Roman numerals on his jersey

When Robert Griffin III was introduced at last month's NFL draft, many took note of the fact that the back of his Washington Commanders jersey included the Roman numeral at the end of his surname. According to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch, it's a historic inclusion. Lukas says, as far as he can tell, Griffin will become the first player in major American sports to have a Roman numeral on the back of his jersey.

for whatever reason it was in Reebok's deal not to put it on the jerseys. Who knows why, but Nike as a selling point to the league said they would.

Really no reason other than marketability...

He's not "Griffin III" he's "Griffin" unless he puts his full name on the back or unless there are two other Griffins on the team...

He should put "He Hate Me"... it's about as relevant...

It's for marketing the "RG3" brand. The NFL now allows advertising on jerseys...

The NFL changed the rule for Griffin III — seems clear — but others may now also use Roman Numerals if part of their name.
"JR." will now be allowed also:

LOL. The NFL is definitely into identifying and actively promoting its potential cash cows, mollycoddling them as may be needed ... now more than ever before, it seems. Money, money, money.

Consider this: Everyone else refers to Griffin as RG3, but adidas commercials refer to him as rgIII.

So the NFL helped to accommodate the advertising angle for RG3 ... er, excuse me ... RGIII and Adidas? Sure may've played a part in the NFL Uni name rule change.

I think he's the first person ever to actually like having Roman numberals next to is name. JR is usually even worse. Most wish they had their own name-- especially after their mail/bills/ad other gets mixed up with their fathers.

I'm the second (ie II) named after my father, and I've never really liked it.

Guess I'll have to start calling myself LP2.
