Robinson vs. Crayton...Perhaps an Interesting Thought

Last year, we let go of Crayton to keep RW. San Diego benefitted from that, as they signed the reliable vet. This year, SD cuts Robinson because he's caught in a numbers game at WR. It could be supposed, that Robinson was let go to keep Crayton. We sign LR, in part to take the palce of RW. Funny how things come around, but it begs the question...

Who would you rather have right now? Robinson or Crayton?

Robinson because he is more explosive and younger.

We have also needed him more as a #1 or #2 this year because of all the time Miles has missed and all the time Dez was hobbled by the thigh contusion.

Oooh. That is sort of interesting. Robinson, right now. Because he's faster, younger, and has shown similar hands. He's really turned into a significant asset for us at a position of need.

Very good premise for a thread. I'd take Robinson in a heartbeat.

Crayton, 2011. 15 catches for 152 yards no TDs. 2010, 28 for 514, 1 TD.

Robinson, 2011. 27 for 441, 4 TD's. Last year with St. Louis, 34 for 344 for 2 TD's.

You know what you're getting with Crayton. Sure hands, good worker, lots of sound bites, 30-40 catches and about 500 yards.

Laurent's ceiling is much, much higher than that.

Robinson. Crayton wasn't happy here anymore. He started complaining and talking to the media about it.

Robinson

Thankfully it worked out like it did. Rarely do you get rewarded for making a stupid decision but seems to be the fortunate outcome in this case.

Yeah I don't think there is much question here that Laurent is the better pickup at this point. Crayton's upside is just so limited, plus he is getting older at this point.

I'm just hoping Jerry doesn't get the bright idea that he now can all of sudden pick up guys like this and be successful with it all the time. We still have to draft well to support guys like Laurent, and not think like we did in 09.

I think, to an extent, we have to hit on some FA signings to make up for that failed draft. You might get away with screwing up here and there, or blowing one draft, but once you string together a series of stinkers some part of your team is going to falter. Exhibit A, New England's defense. Exhibit B, Indy.

Take a look at how Chris Polian has run that team into the ground while chasing off a good group of scouts and Howard Mudd as well. Their drafts from 2007 or 2006 up to 2011 flat out stunk.

EDIT: Worth mentioning, however distasteful in hindsight...

It's amazing to see Laurent come in and play with confidence, and see Romo have confidence in his ability. Remember how we all waited and waited for Roy Williams to do the same?

Yeah, as we faltered last year. The FAs we have signed have made up for alot, and I totally agree with that. We just can't depend on it to continue to be as successful in the future as it has this year, we do have to continue to draft well like we have done recently.

Laurent, Coleman, and Elam have been the finds of the century for us this year. Roster churn has helped us really look for these players that can help us, and hopefully that will continue.

BTW, yeah Roy was just a square peg trying to fit in a circular opening. Not to mention his ability was well overrated.

Robinson's impact this year is very similar to Austin's '09 breakout. He'll be a difference maker the rest of the way.

I'll join the chorus. Great thread premise!

Crayton & Robinson are two very different styles of #3 receiver. Both have their niche but as others have said I think Robinson has more upside and seems far more capable of stepping into a #2 role if need be. Attitude is a plus as well right now. Hopefully he proves durable as that has apparently been his problem at his previous stops.

this.

Robinson and it's not even close.

How does San Diego have 5 better receivers than Robinson?

I said a few weeks ago that landing Robinson has finally made me forget about giving away Crayton. Crayton was a very good and undervalued player on our team.

Robinson hands down. I think he is an overall better WR than Crayton ever was

I take Robinson because he hasn't yet choked in an NFC home playoff game by dropping an easy pass for a critical first down or giving up on a pass route after beating his defender late in the game when we were behind....Robinson also doesn't shoot his mouth off and then can't back it up with his play on the field. Other than those things, I might take Crayton.
